The name of the Art of Benjamin Luna Lema "Lightning Scientific Arnis", "Lightning Scientific Arnis International" (LSAI) and it's logo is a registered trademark (Intellectual Property Office application #1083, OR #7007741A approved Feb 6, 2003) owned by his children/heirs, Patty Jean Luna Caballero, Benjamin Joseph Luna Jr., John Edward Luna and Paul Anthony Luna. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Just read an article about the two (info given to author from J.C. Cabiero) stating Angel trained with Dizon for 20 years. How old was Manong Cabales when he arrived in the US then? Must admit I know very little about Cabiero. However, he was described as being Cabales' most personal student or something like that (been about a month since I read it). Take care, Ingmund _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 07 Feb 2003 11:01:57 -0500 From: Khalkee@netscape.net To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] San Soo/San Shou Throws Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net The throws of Shuai Chiao Kung Fu can be found well-integrated into most Chinese systems. Are any of Gm Lema's children carrying on the art or is Elmer Ybanez going to head it up now??? How old was Manong Cabales when he arrived in the US then? He was born in 1917. He left the RP in the late 1930s, maybe 1939. Kinda hard for him to have trained with Dizon for 20 years. :) > Must admit I know very little about Cabiero. Many have made the claim that they were Angel's most experienced "closed door student", most after Angel passed on. My introduction to FMA was many years after I started with Shaolin. The integration of the two is almost a study in opposites - the concrete CMA compared with the abstract FMA. I found Chad's post very interesting, mostly for the fact that we had the same instructor but developed quite differently as fighters/students. Even things as minute as spelling, which made me think back to other posts. For example, what Chad spells as 'hangen' and 'wak wak', I spell as 'hangin' and 'wok-wok'. While seemingly insignificant, when I asked my grandmother about the nuances of her dialect (Ilocano), she said the difference in pronunciation can lead to very different meanings. To make things even more confusing, our instructor is Visayan. And I seem to remember wok-wok meant a fruit bat. But I've been hit in the head more times than Chad and so my memory is not so reliable. But it does help to illustrate how meanings and words can evolve/change even among "same generation" students with a common instructor. All of datu's teaching was oral and written down by the students, and we each chose where to focus the attention of material for our notes. Plus, we each had unique questions which datu would help us answer that sometimes the others would not hear...no hoarding of secrets or anything, just different focuses leading to individual resolutions. Datu did certify me to teach under his name, and being the man he is, also gave me permission to modify his style as I saw fit. Now please understand, I know that I know far less than he does, but the body mechanics that work for datu (at 5'1" & 110 lbs.) do not necessarily work for me (5'10" & ~200 lbs.ish). He knew that and even encouraged me (like he encouraged us all) to modify things to better work for us. So the result being that what I teach as "Nitullama Silat" looks very different from what the other students have developed. The differences have definitely shown up in the fighting. Chad is the consumate problem-solver/tactician and James is the classic "counterpuncher" with amazing timing, sense of distance, and by far the best grappling skills of the group (he still regularly attends BJJ classes). This past Sunday when we fought, I really saw the 'hangin' style come out in his fight against KC. James fluidity in stick movement disguised sticks shifts (from right hand to left) and had this amazing "stick version of the spinning backfist" technique. I pray I never get hit with that, because it looked like a world of pain. Back to the empty hands, datu had some amazing movements. Classic limb destructions coupled with elevation shifts all meshed together with a plethora of sipak (low kicks), elbows, knees and headbutts made for some great learning. His ability to slap a gunting into my arm led for some memorable bruises on my part, but the lessons have become steadfast tools in my arsenal. Datu was excellent at helping me to incorporate some of the daito ryu techniques into my FMA structure. Hell, I was so jazzed with my experience under datu that I wrote a paper for a business communications class titled "Sipaks & Guntings: An introduction to the world of Filipino martial arts". I know, I'm a closet nerd pretending to be a stickfighter. Just don't tell anyone. Ray, thanks again for an open forum on which to ramble. Peace, respect and an open mind. Just because my mind is a >>inexplicable whirlwind of never ending nodes of transient thought cascading >>into an endless labyrinth of unimaginable knowledge second only to that of >>the creator himself!!!!!!! :-) Nah I am not deep at all!!! And I realize, it's not just me. 85% of us are probably tweakers on the stick. Seriously, someone asked me where do I get the motivation to train every night. Answer is two part: 1)James, Kalani, and Leroy hit really hard, and 2) I tweak on the sticks. Ever since I picked up the sticks, I couldn't get it out of my head. Driving in the car, how many of us have not played with the angles of attack on our steering wheels? How many of us have NOT hit the ceiling fans, chandelier, or just the ceiling? How many of us have accidentally hit a loved one? <> How many of us want to just get a few more swings in before bed time, than wind up not tired after you've worked yourself into a frenzied sweat? Or train in the bathroom? Or written, what is percieved by ourself to be, brilliant breakthroughs when it comes to the sticks, on backs of work papers/napkins, etc., etc.? I bet you Floro tweaked on the stick. Eric? Marc? Ray? How many of you tweak on the stick? Just sitting in my office, I see 6 "official" sticks/weapons laying around. And I manage a senior building. Coincidentally, the other week, when stickfighting in the community room, a WWII vet came and talked to me. Told me about how he killed the japanese with his bolo. Took me upstairs and showed me his sword and guns. I hope he comes down next week and watch us train. >>Anything you want Rocky getz it.....get it!!! sorry I had to just couldn't >>resist, I really tried :-) I actually have an uncle named Leo in California. How embarrassing. Does anyone know where there is some good information on letrada(or is it riterada)? I think there are both, actually. ~Chad Stickfighting Hawaii --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
