One of the FMA practitioners who can perform carrenza gracefully is GM Andrew Abrian who teaches at the Luneta his system called Moro-moro Orabes Heneral. Moro-moro here should not be confused as originating from the Muslim people of Mindanao. It probably originated from either Bohol or Samar of the Visayan Islands. One of the most Illustrious practitioners of the Moro-moro was the late GM Telesporo Subingsubing. Yes, I saw that picture of GM Lacoste in Dan Inosanto's book. It's authentic Carrenza! Let me stress however, that the empty hand applications of the FMA is called CADENA DE MANO in Cebu, not carrenza. There is one master named Eusebio Monino who teaches purely Cadena De Mano to interested students. Please let's stop arguing about the empty hand techniques of FMA as influenced by the Japanese styles...because it's not! Or worse don't even assume that the Moro people invented our Martial Arts. The Shuai aspect of Gaoshi Baguazhang is still quite apparent in the Yizhong system of Zhang Zhunfeng as represented by my teacher Luo Dexiu. Luo will be coming back to the states this summer. Interestingly my first exposure to silat was seeing a head throw (puter kapala) that I recognized from bagua. This led me to my study pf PPS Sera with Pak Victor DeThouars in addition to bagua. Since I like all arts and do lots of research, I practiced with Ustad Dan at the time. Then Ustad Dan took him home. Altough I like La Costa Kali somewhat more to my personality. Atillios Balintawak It is a One stick art, driven by its founder. And yes we do have the Copies of the Balintawak Photo team were Atillios father was, and also the lineage. Very Interesting experience both Ustan Dan Inosanto had and my self. Guro Atillio seam to be a very likeable person and always ready to share his knowledge with others. This is so participants can build upon what they have practiced from week to week, instead of from month to every other month. Retention of the material seems to be better if the classes are scheduled in this manner. Interested parties can contact me at lhommedieu@hotmail.com. On the topic of member Delfin Lopez, if I recall correctly he was something of an eskrimador, but he is far better remembered/feared because those he shot, i.e. assassinated. He was brought in during a labor dispute to scare the workers and one of them stabbed him in the back, killing him. Given Delfin's rep, the stabber was found not guilty. Or so the story goes... BTW, does the watch/clock repair shop on Balintawak street still exist? It would be interesting to see the area to the rear of the shop where Bacon and Balintawak held their training sessions... Ray Here is how Joe A. Bautista of the Atlas' SPORTS Weekly Magazine saw it: "In Metro Manila, people shout, "Ninoy! Ninoy!" in sympathy with Ninoy Aquino's tragic death. But here in Cebu City, sports-loving folks yell "Cacoy! Cacoy!" for the 64-year-old Ciriaco 'Cacoy' Canete, the unbeaten, durable eskrima/arnis champion of the Philippines. The outburst of admiring Cebuanos was heard at the historic, well-attended "Arnis Duel of 1983", held at the PC/INP Clubhouse Gym on Osmena Blvd., Cebu City last September 17, 1983, between the incumbent champion, Ciriaco Canete of the famed Cebu Doce Pares club and challenger CrispuloAtillo of the Philippine Arnis Federation. The thrill-packed confrontation was ballyhooed as a "grudge combat" intended to verify who's really who among the acclaimed experts in the world of eskrima. Under a free admission arrangement, the much-awaited showdown drew a tremendous multitude of excited fans and followers of the two arch-protagonists. Weeks before the encounter, Canete and Atillo exchanged verbal barbs and expletives over Radio Stations DYRC and DYLA and through the columns of Cebu City's leading daily tabloids like the Sun Star, Freeman, The Republic, and others. The feuding eskrimadors agreed on waging a "duel to the death" under the rules and regulations of the bone-breaking, skull-cracking game. A security bond in the amount of P2,000.00 for each fighter was also agreed upon by the duelists, duly certified to by their lawyers. The bond was to cover any serious or fatal consequences. Ciriaco Canete, national champion since 1979, wore the regulation attire for the eskrimador or arnis battler - white cacha blouse with black belt and blue pants, while the smaller, spunky challenger, Crispulo Esing Atillo was in ordinary jogging pants and sport shirts. Canete is 64 years old; Atillo is 45 - or 19 years younger than the champ. They waived the use of head protectors. Former GAB official, lawyer Luciano Babiera, Sr. acted as referee. The bout was billed at 2 rounds; 3 minutes per round. At the given signal of the referee, following the usual instructions and reminders, Canete rushed towards Challenger Atillo and launched his characteristic blitzkrieg attack with lightning-strokes, aiming the hardened stick on his opponent's head and face. Atillo looked stunned, responding with only a semblance of a counter-offense. Then Canete struck him with a crunching blow on the right wrist, causing Atillo's rattan stick to fly off, rendering him helpless. Badly hurt, the challenger retreated to his corner, where a PC attendant handed back to him his fallen weapon. But Atillo showed his refusal to continue to fight. After he was quickly disarmed by Canete, in the first 15 seconds of the opening round, Atillo clung desperately for dear life on Canete's side, his mug grim in pain. Referee Babiera declared Ciriaco Canete the winner by TKO in the first round? [end Bautista quote] Commentary... That night Atillo went back on radio to ask for a rematch, claiming Canete had used on him "illegal" grappling techniques. Again a permit from Philippine Constabulary was obtained through the usual process. The agreed venue was the Cebu Coliseum that holds 10,000 spectators. Admission was P50. Four days after, the spectators filed for the rematch. First, they watched five preliminary fights. One of the participants was Cacoy's son Edgar who fought under the rules that prescribed the wearing of headgear. In his corner, Cacoy thought of his fight strategy. He would use again the rattan stick of close nodes. He intended to rush Atillo immediately and attack him with twirling baton and lightning speed and hit him here and there; he would go down. When the main event was announced, Canete and Atillo walked up to the stage. The ring physician Dr. Tojong first examined Canete and found him okay. The doctor took a longer time with Atillo: he found his blood pressure was 180 over 100 and he had a pulse rate of 128 per minute. He feared that the fighter's heart would rupture under the stress of combat; he declared him medically unfit to fight. Nevertheless, he asked Atillo if he would fight despite his ailments. "I cannot fight," Atillo answered. His wife, who stood nigh, asked, "How come! You were in high spirits this afternoon, how come you now have high blood pressure?" Atillo apologised to his wife, "I did not have a good sleep last night." So the rematch fizzled out to the dismay of the paying public. The crowd threw things at Atillo, demanding from him the return of their money. [end commentary] Joe A. Bautista of the Atlas' SPORTS Weekly Magazine again: "While recuperating from his wrist injury, Esing Atillo upon the urgings of his close associates voiced his desire for a rematch. Cacoy was only too glad to accommodate him. The 2nd encounter was arranged and slated for September. 21, 1983, at a much bigger venue, the 10,000-seat Cebu Coliseum in midtown Cebu City. The rematch was given the gosignal by PC Col. Simeon Kempis, Jr. and Major Antonio Medija of Camp President Osmena, as personally requested by Mr. Atillo himself. The Cebu Coliseum was packed by an estimated 9,000 eskrima aficionades who paid P2, P35 and P50 admission fees to see the Canete-Atillo Crackdown Part II. The night's card included seven preliminary bouts among selected eskrimadors from the different clubs established in Metro Cebu. Danny Guba (Doce Pares) and Varelo Ouano of Mandaue City drew in the opening attraction. Edgar Canete of Doce Pares vanquished Fil de la Cerna of Mandaue City; Eric Mosqueda of Doce Pares defeated Fermin Misa Jr. of Lapulapu City; William Dy of Doce Pares outclassed Jun Villalrias of Mandaue; Susing Purisima of Mandaue humbled Adrian Gellang of CEMUSA; Policarpio Berberes of Doce Pares beat Boy de Cerna of Lapulapu City; and Cris Ampit of Lapunti Club TKO'd Boy Cenencia of Bato, Toledo City. All was going fine to the satisfaction of the crowd until the announcement of the main bout. Tournament physician, Dr. Eduardo Tojong, at the last minute medical check up of the fighters, found Atillo to be suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure. Dr. Tojong pronounced Atillo unfit for the second showdown, because his blood-pressure was 180 over 100, and his heartbeat jumped to 128 per minute, which "was quite risky for Atillo to engage in such strenuous, skull cracking sport." "The usual normal blood pressure of man is 120 over 80," the doctor said. The paying spectators were jolted from their seats upon learning that the fight could not proceed. They were so angry that Esing Atillo had to be escorted out of the jammed Coliseum by Constabulary men to insure his safety. In the meantime, Champion Cacoy Canete publicly accepted the challenge hurled at him by retired Police Major Timoteo Maranga of Tres Personas Self-Defense Club. As far as 6 months ago, Maj. Maranga had been repeatedly challenging Canete to a championship winner-take-all duel. Cacoy Canete is a soft-spoken, unpretentious person by nature, but he is one gentleman who never runs away from a good fight. "If I were granted the rare opportunity, I am willing and ready to cross weapons with both Crispulo Atillo and Timoteo Maranga, all in one night, and they can take my word for it," Canete said. He added that he wants the NARAPHIL (National Arnis Association of the Philippines) headed by General Fabian Ver to sponsor it, sooner the better." --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
