Moro-moro and Hukbalahap (GatPuno@aol.com) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 13:59:20 +0100 (MET) From: Christian Farinetto To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] WWII and HUKs Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net The name "Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon" was suggested by some chinese military advisers. Communist China strongly influenced the PKP partly because of the proximity of the Philippines to China. Although the ideology of the movement was closer to socialist concepts than communists (difficult to imagine pure maoist or stalinist philippinos...) the HUKs received support from officers of the chinese Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) who instructed them in guerilla warfare. They learned and applied the PLAs tactics which proved to be effective against the Japanese army and the Nationalist Chineses in mainland China. The close ties between the PKP and the Chinese Communists also allowed later to organize an all-Chinese force, the Overseas Chinese 48th Detachment of the People's anti-Japanese Forces, or "Wachi" another child of the long list of atrocities the Japanese Imperial Army inflicted on the Chinese populations in South East Asia, (this Chinese unit soperated almost exclusively in the provinces of Bulacan and Laguna and, by war's end, included six 200-man batallions). Actually Tsinois received usually harsher treatment than the native philippinos from the Japaneses, being prime suspects for communist activities. Luis Taruc (still alive), "El Supremo",was elected head of the HUK movement. Firstly five squadrons of hundert man were created. The hundert man sqadron would become the basic fighting unit of the guerrilas. One squadron was led by a commander an executive officer, and an iteligence officer. It was itself divised into platons and squads. Two squadrons formed one batallion and two batallions one regiment. Regiments were organised following geographical districts (1st district northern Pampanga, 2nd district central Pampanga etc...). to be followed..... I wonder if the Wachi's had also their equivalent of the Bohol batallion... Dr. Christian Farinetto -- +++ GMX - Mail, Messaging & more http://www.gmx.net +++ Bitte lächeln! To this day he continues to acknowledge his training and subsequent martial abilities are directly related to Tuhon Gaje. I agree with Mike's give credit where credit is due. Pekiti Tirsia is Knife. This segue's into my original intent of this post. Tuhon Bill will be hosted by the Progressive Martial Arts Training Center for a single stick and practical empty hand vs. knife defense seminar on April 26-27 in Lafayette, La. This is a 16 hour seminar. Contact Danny Terrell dterrell@cox-internet.com or 337-201-0343 for more info. I've been practising Serrada Escrima for the past year or so, and have pain that varies between my neck and tricep on my right side. I saw a physical therapist a while back and she prescribed some exercises that helped a bit, but I'm thinking that perhaps this goes beyond rotator cuff problems and is perhaps a pinched nerve. Anyone try acupuncture? Your comments are most appreciated. -J -- Jonathan Winter Science Resource Specialist Lafayette School 950 Moraga Rd. I was born and raised in the family of Eskrimador, Arnisador, Estokadors, Moro-moro player and Huk. Since you mention, early on your post about "Moro-moro", I would like to give a little back ground of this so called "Palabas" (Play). First of all "Moro-moro to us is the mother art of Arnis De Mano", many Arnis history claimed that, this where the art was hidden in front of the faces of the Spanish Conquerors. Moro also is not only refers to the Filipino Moslem, if that you are saying. Let keep in mind, Moro is a Spanish words for moslem not necessarily Filipino, this refres to the Moors around the worlds. Moro-moro plays is consisted of all techniques found in any FMA, start from Carenza, what we called is Pamamaltacia, Abecedario, and the Sayaws "we called Batalyas", from single sword, daggers, sibat, double weapon, and other weapon founds in typicall FMA. It is not dis grading the moslem nor insulting them in any ways. This is just the way the Filipino used to hide the original arts. This is also the biginning of the well structured arts of the Filipino Martial arts. Numerous Filipino martial arts, practice little here and there, and called it complete arts, well if you dont have any idea about Moro-moro you would missed a lot, historically and technically. I am in the process of publishing the first book in "Moro-moro" the mother art of Arnis de Mano" hopefully it will be in the market before end of this year. I am hoping it will hope to other Eskrimadores and Arnisadores to understand the closer look of the true menaing of the arts of Moro-moro. Second: HUKBALAHAP My own Uncle Leocadio V. Baet aka. Kumander Sabo of Laguna is a older brother of my father GM Felipe "Garimot" Baet also a Huk member the sons of my Grandfather GM Jose "Uti" Baet a HUK adviser. Hukbalahap is headed by Luis Taroc, from Central Luzon, and well supported by people of the Philippines. You have to remember and unbderstand "President Quezon" is not elect president of the people of the Philippines he was appointed. At the same time, he is under the rules of Japanese on his term president. The Hukbalahap is the yourger generation of "Katipunan" all farmers (Magbubukid). Luis Taroc promise them a good future after the war including giving them land to farm which is not granted after the war. This make them go back to the mountain and changed the Hukbalahap to new Hukbong Bayang Mapagpalaya" which was charged as part of the Communist Party not at all. Later Luis Taroc surrender to President Ramon Magsaysay promising every Huk member would get the land of their dream , but President Ramon Magsaysay was killed in Planes, planted bomb going back to Manila. President umtimely death make the promised Farm land to the Huk dis-regards. Some huks went back to the Mountain, this time my family start a new life in the lowland. Which later the Huks became easy target for "Communist recruiting agents" and turn all of them communist, the NPA (New Peoples Army). What I am trying to clear is the HUK is not in any way was member of Communist Party of the Philippines. In fact on the 70's and 80's the Huk Commander are active as Assemblyman Luis Taroc under Ferdinand Marcos Presidency, a lot of Huk was given the opportunity to own a land under the Department of Agrarian Reform. Presidential Act 130 if I am not mistaken. This portion of the history is not copy from any book, this is original opinion from my self, as I recall what my Uncle and father told me the story based on their life in the mountain as Hukbalahap, my Uncle is still alive @ age 79 and residing in Binan Laguna, Philippines. Not to mentioned the Arnis practiced in Hukbalahap training camp is mainly the "Laban Tulisan" a composite of all Arnis, Eskrima system. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
