Nothing I have ever done is even close to the movements found in Muay Thai although I find that the boxing works very well with FMA empty-hand. For example, using Boxing to emphasize my punching in FMA makes for better punching. And because FMA is not limited to closed-fist strikes, a lot of targets can be struck without fear of breaking the knuckles or hyperextending the wrist (like punching a person's jaw or skull) and just use a "safe" palm heel or ridge hand. I also liked mixing up the FMA and Boxing footwork because my boxing style is a little rigid. Blending it in with FMA made me a little smoother and relaxed (at least thats what I think...). I have an old Elishewitz Tanto-style folder which I like very much. Its small, fits nicely in my hands and has a nice butt-end which is great for pressure points and such. I have never used it in self-defense. If it ever came to that, I don't think I would be fast enough to draw the blade and would just end up using it Punyo-style with all Ice-Pick grip strikes. If I walk through an airport metal detector and I can't bring my blade, then I like my Pelican flashlight which is probably as short as my folder, but fits even better in my hand. I take it with me on every flight. I have never used this in self-defense either. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! In the car, I have a stick, a couple of knives, and a South American version of a "sjambok" made from twisted rawhide (it's a wicked item). And, of course, my ice scraper. What I carry? My cell phone and, usually, a book. What I'll use to defend myself? Anything I can get my hands on when I perceive a threat. Mike -----Original Message----- From: S. H. I think basically it can be divided into three categories: 1. Those you left at home. 2. Those you left in your car, and 3. Those you carrry with you. Let us know the reason you've chosen the particular weapons and if you have used it in real confraontation. Thanks. S. H. Greeting to all! I've been practicing Kali around 6 years and last 4 years Pekiti-Tirsia Kali. Kas-Pin is Mr. Kaarlo Valkonen family fighting system (since 1500-1600?), main focus is on the knife. There's also had weird looking walking stick too. I've been attended twice Mr. Kaarlo Valkonen one day seminar in Helsinki. My opinion after those days is hmm interesting. Walking stick which you can use for trapping a hand was not so good. More like a circus tricks, is okay for them who has never seen a stick in action. But not for a Kali people. Knife work was better. The style was more like you stab or slash and I do my counter. There's was no angling or sidestepping footwork. From my point of view the structure was missing or maybe he was showing just small piece of the system. The best was empty hand because Kaarlo really knows the human body weak points, kind of Tuite Jutsu. That suite for him very well because he has a big hand and fingers were very- very thick and strong. Kaarlo has a good stories and I believe that all good story teller had to add something to the story without braking a truth. Maybe twisting, I would say. Roland Isla told a good story regarding drinking, knives and Finns. I give one more about gypsies Knife fighting in Finland. Some times they resolve there own disagreements by fighting with knives only holding the knife from the blade side and not the handle. So there is about 1-3 cm steel available for stabbing or slashing. That means that you can only hurt a guy little bit but there is no killing blow. So you are not going to the jail for the murder (10-12 years). Well said. My favorite self-defense weapon is my brain - my brain tells me that modern projectile weapons beat almost everything else, uhm... no, make that everything else. I feel that guns are often an overlooked part of training. Even by people who cross train to become more well-rounded often don't make the trip to the gun range. In my opinion (for what that's worth), leaving gun tactics out of your martial arts training is just as bad as leaving out the knife. The first one that comes to my mind is Pekiti Tirsia. The Sayoc clan do a lot of firearm training, too ... though I'm not sure if it's included in their "Sayoc Family System" or not. Personally, I think that any weapon (or anything that can be used as a weapon) is part of martial arts. I consider bows and arrows, blowguns, firearms, rocks, sticks, blades, remote controls, jackets, purses, cell phones, etc. all to be part of martial arts :-) And I very much think that firearms are part of martial arts. But, each to their own. As long as you don't hold my beliefs against me, I won't hold yours against you :-) Mike --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Mike Casto" To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] speed Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 10:28:41 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I think the key to developing speed is relaxation. A good training method is to go as slow as you can and really work on relaxed movement and proper body mechanics (Tai Chi anyone ;-) Slow movement ingrains traits better and, generally, faster than fast training. So, by moving slow and focusing on mechanics and relaxation, you'll pretty rapidly ingrain good habits into your body. Once they're ingrained, then you can start speeding up without getting sloppy. And, chances are, you'll end up with more speed *and* more power than you'd have had if you only focus on training speed. Not only in the hands but with footwork, kicking, and general body movement relating to throws. I am now working on getting my bodyweight down and my strength up. I would like to supplement this strength with speed. In my experience, the ability to tag your opponent first is a much better attribute than the ability to bench press him. And the numbers from last year, combined with those from the previous year, matched a two-year low not seen since the mid-1960s. ... Seattle police handled 26 murders in 2002 and 25 in 2001. The last time the numbers were this low were in 1964 and 1965, when there were 23 and 24 murders, police said yesterday. ... When it comes to violent crime, Seattle ranks 21st among the 25 largest cities. That means 20 of the largest cities had higher homicide rates than did Seattle." Well, at least it is mainly non-lethal violence in Seattle. Living between Baltimore and DC, I was surprised at how few murders Seattle actually had. Just to add to the poll, when out, I normally don't carry anything. House has various weapons. SUV has one or two things tucked away, but I'm unlikely to exit a 1.5 ton weapon/get-out-of-area-vehicle to use them.
