Further information on the system can be found at: www.eskrima.com. Regards, James M. Seetoo Instructor San Miguel Eskrima Just thought that I would point out that I teach San Miguel Eskrima (though I am in Saudi Arabia at the moment), though my training comes from GM Urbano "Banoy" Borja. He was one of Momoy's stable of fighters during the Balintawak wars in the early 60's, and along with GM Casio, the senior student of Momoy's still living. GM Borjas's San Miguel is different than that of most of the other groups in the US in that he teaches the way it was taught in the late 50's and early 60's. Momoy was constantly adding to and changing his curriculum, right up to the day he died, so what was learned varied tremendously with the time it was learned. There has been some discussion of this in previous Digests, but just as an example, the San Miguel form taught by GM Borja is quite short, taking perhaps less than a couple minutes to complete. The more recent versions, including that taught within the Doce Pares Multi-System today are much longer, making it into an almost tai chi-type of exercise. Just as an aside, there is another group in Cebu, the Mig-Sune-Do group taught by Zhun Dacayana, which bases their form on the San Miguel form. The father of Master Dacayana, GM Alberto Dacayana, learned from Momoy back at about the same time as GM Borja, and their form is also quite short, though you can repeat the same movements over and over to make it longer. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Steven Lefebvre" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 10:55:01 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Don't forget "Light" Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello Everyone, I think most of the carry options(Blades) are of personal preference. 1 thing everyone should also consider is a flashlight. Don't skimp here either, invest in a Surefire light. A 6P at 65 - 120 Lumens, or a better model, will do more than just put light on an opponent! Use your light in a variety of situations of carry, add your firearm, add your baton, add your knife or mace, and see how your tactical advantage goes way up! Steve wrote < If anyone knows of some others (books) I would love to read them as well.> I picked up a book called "American Guerilla in the Philippines" at a office supply store for a $1.00 (it was a display book on a desk unit). This is a pretty good book, well written by a news paper journalist close to the end of WWII. It details the account of an American soldier who got stranded on the Philippines after McArthur left and helped in the resistance movement. Also I read a book called "Bullets and Bolos" (or was it "Bolos and Bullets") written about a man who served in the Philippines at or near the turn of the century as a constable (?) or a policeman. Sorry if I have the terms wrong for what the law enforcement was in the Philippines back than, I read the book a couple of years ago on loan from a library. Anyway it is another interesting book on life back then. I forget the author's name now but I'm still hunting for the book in every half price bookstore, antique store, etc. that I visit. It is out of print. The Weapons of Moroland wall plaque has the red portion of the flag on the right side so that if you turn it to the left the red will be on top. I've read that this means we're in a state of war. Is this a production flaw on the plaque or does it symbolize the constant struggles of the Moros against the Spaniards? Philippines President Gloria Arroyo on Monday approved joint training on the island of Jolo, where some Abu Sayyaf rebels fled last year. In addition, U.S. officials said they may have new information connecting Philippine rebel groups to international terrorist networks. --------------------- Item Number:12 Date: 02/20/2003 PHILIPPINES - REBELS GUN DOWN 14 VILLAGERS IN RAID (FEB 20/AP) ASSOCIATED PRESS -- A group of suspected separatist rebels raided the village of Poblacion, in Zamboanga del Norte province, southern Philippines, rounding up some of the residents and gunning them down, the Associated Press reports. The attack, which officials said they suspected was carried out by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, took place when 50 armed men ordered villagers to assemble, then opened fire on them. Five of the 14 killed were children, police said. Six villagers were wounded. Government troops are pursuing the attackers in the remote, mountainous region, said military and police officials. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "jay de leon" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Cc: theclassic33@hotmail.com Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2003 18:11:46 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Jay Saguisabal and FMA success Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Jay Saguisabal wrote, "It's sad that most of the lesser known FMA teachers with the best information have the hardest time keeping the lights on, while the ones with the least experience and the best marketing are spreading their brand of FMA." Probably true, and it is probably also true of MA in general. Every time a student wants to teach or open a dojo and asks me for advice, this is what I tell him. First decide whether you are doing this as a hobby (or a passion or just giving back or any other altruistic purpose) or as a business. The moment you decide it's the latter, then you better treat it as a business and understand that it is primarily a marketing game. The first lesson in this game is, there is no direct correlation between your technical expertise or your body count and your financial success. The fact that you are the deadliest human being that ever put on a gi or swung double sticks will not guarantee you financial sucess. The reverse implication here is that you could be a mediocre martial artist but a killer marketeer, and you should do well. (Before I get nasty emails, please reread the first sentence of this paragraph. This is NOT the same as saying all successful dojo owners have mediocre MA skills.) One of my students at San Jose was Jeff King, a TKD master and very successful dojo owner who also gives seminars on how to run a sucessful (profitable) martial arts business. He was kind enough to provide me with his "success" kit. Guys, it is a full-time marketing job and part-time MA instructor, and you need to know the tricks of the trade. And just for reading this post, I will reveal to you for free the secret marketing mantra-- "Promote, promote, promote." Just wanted to ask everyone to keep Master Ed Bansuelo's daughter (Estalilla Kabaroan, Sacramento, CA) in their thoughts and prayers. Last week, she was diagnosed with Leukemia after battling various ailments. Through the grace of God, she is making a strong recovery and will overcome this cancer. Grand Master Ramiro Estalilla (Rigonan-Estalilla Kabaroan) was involved in a traffic accident on Friday, February 7th, 2003. Thankfully, he was not seriously hurt in the accident but was taken to the hospital for a check up. He is recovering at home in Fresno, CA and I am told, his senior students have taken over his classes for him. He is currently undergoing physical therapy for the aches and pains caused by the accident. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as well.
