Peace and order in RP (jay de leon) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: "jay de leon" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Cc: theclassic33@hotmail.com Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 21:11:14 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Peace and order in RP Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I lived and worked in Cotabato, Mindanao for a couple of years in the early 70's. Every time I flew back home to Manila, I would make sure I stayed a couple of days with friends at either Cebu or Iloilo, for much needed R & R. Both cities were then peaceful, beautiful and had a character of their own. I was happy, therefore, to read the several posts about the current peace and order situation in Cebu and Iloilo. To that gentleman planning on going to Cebu, go. Many of us will envy you. On the other side of the coin, just this week I saw on cable Filipino TV, actual footage of recent heavy fighting in the towns of Sultan Kudarat, Pikit and Kidapawan in Cotabato. I used to drive through these towns almost on a daily basis when I worked there, and personally knew the mayors and officials of these towns then. These towns were extremely dangerous then, and they appear even more dangerous now. During those times, driving past the towns of Pikit and Makilala, you could still see burnt-out houses from the highway, remnants of the Muslim-Ilaga (Christian paramilitary) wars. After almost thirty years, nothing has changed. Truly sad.
