There is a lot of good back ground information in the tapes and only a handful of techniques/drills on the tapes. If you do a lot of Silat you won't find anything new in the tapes. But if your a video geek like you mentioned above then you would probably like them in your collection. Mission One Introduction: LifeStyles Mission One Course Outline: Lifestyles Scenario training was designed to increase someone's chances of surviving a violent confrontation in today's society through awareness, education, and realty based situational training. LifeStyles Mission One is based on the highest risk, statistical time, and instance of violent crime to the average person in today's society. Violence and the current trend: We cannot stop the current violent trends in today's society, but we can slow them down and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a violent crime. Education: By educating ourselves fully, we can learn how to avoid violence, de-escalate, stop the aggression, and save our lives by getting away. " The intent of a Rapist, Stalker, Killer, Attacker": Serial killer, Ted Bundy after being arrested, and convicted has stated repeatedly that his selection of victims was based on them being easy pray and a fast target, when he chose his victims he would look for someone that was unaware of their environment and looked easy to abduct based on their lack of alertness and awareness." Well, I think that TECHNICALLY it isnıt that difficult at all to kill somebody, with or without weapons! Read carefully, I said ³technically². Shooting, stabbing or strangling someone doesnıt require tremendous skill indeed. Nevertheless, for a normal person, killing (outside self-defense) tends to be very difficult: most of us are moral beings and we donıt enjoy violence. However, in modern times self-defense is is one of the major finalities of martial arts training. One of the major misconceptions in self-defense is that it is about killing. It is rather about STOPPING. You want to stop your opponent from doing serious harm to you or to somebody else. Stopping is IMHO far more difficult than killing. As an example: you shoot your assailant and he is lethally wounded and he will certainly die within 20 seconds; if he carries a gun himself, in those 20 seconds he can still empty his gun at you or at somebody else; ie. he has not been stopped! In my example the bad guy was killed but not stopped, so killing is not always enough‹itıs also the way it is done that matters. On the other hand your opponent may change his intentions upon seeing your gun aimed at him and give up. In this case, the bad guy was stopped without shooting. Sometimes just yelling or some well aimed punches can stop your opponent, on other occasions it might take a cranio-ocular shot from a high-powered rifle. Learning to stop an opponent is a skill that requires a lot of training regardless of the weapon (empty hand, knife, firearm) you choose to use. Better still, perhaps one should pursue proficiency with all available weapons (including guns)to become a well-rounded martial artist. In my opinion firearms do have their place in martial arts training. In FMA we tend to say ³in a knife fight, expect to get cut!². Should one, by analogy, also say ³in a gun fight, expect to get shot!²? Disclaimer: my above statements are not based on personal experience (and I hope it will stay that way) but rather on what I have read on the subject. I am no expert on killing or self-defense, I just wanted to share some thougths and ideas I have read over the years and that seem logical to me. All comments are welcome! Luckely they were defeated by the national Indonesian Armed forces of Suharto Nice history, but a violent one. Over a half million folks were killed. Even tho we are trained to aim center mass, we frequently focus on the threat, tunnel vision focused right on the gun pointing at us. If you've ever had a gun pointed at you in anger you'll probably recall just how VERY large the end of the barrel looked. A .22 looks like a .45, a .45 looks like a 12 ga. shotgun and a 12 ga. looks to be as big as a house. Given that tunnel vision, when/if we do fire we frequently forget all about center mass and end up shooting at/toward the opponent's gun. Morale of the story??? Also learn 'wounded officer techniques', i.e. shooting with your weak hand. I've met Guru Harold! I got to train with him a little bit and talk to him quite a bit at Uncle Bill's Family Gathering last year in Miami. Great guy and a very good martial artist. I really enjoyed the brief time I spent with him and hope to bring him up to Louisville for a seminar once I get established (should be by next year, hopefully sooner). I also know Guru Bruno from Uncle's Family Gatherings. Bruno's a great guy. I've met him a few times. Have you ever attended a Gathering, Tom?
