Don't misunderstand me, Ibu is great. " " I was getting ready to Fight in a Shoot Wrestling tournament in Japan and Pak Herman was at the Inosanto Academy. he got out of just about everything I placed him in. " "Can someone give the low-down on Mande Muda? I've never been quite clear on this " I hope I did not come off with people thinking the Mande Muda successors are no good. On the contrary, I can say nothing about them. I have never had the good fortune to meet Rita or Bong Bong family members who have taken over the art I think. Pak Herman was a fighter. He said he was number one son and his father made him go out and do all these things even get in fights to learn the real-time attributes. As number one son it was his obligation to carry on the system, represent the system, and honor it by beating any comer. The burden and pressure on him I gather was greater on him than his siblings. Mande Muda was a compilation of about 20 subarts starting with 17th century cimunde and then cikalong and syahbander next on the family tree. Rikasan which Guro Baliki illuded to was one of them. With our growing interest (and I mean just about everyone in So. Cal) in real ground fighting Pak rekindled some old relationships with some other art in Indonesia that I can't remember the name of which was more like the BJJ and submission wrestling. It was no officially in the Mande Muda family of arts. He started to teach it to us in our last private backyard sessions sometime before his passing in Germany. He had so much to teach that he rarely taught outside of the 20 or so listed Mande Muda arts but still was learning new arts from other guys. Off the top of my head some of the arts are cimunde, rikasan, sera, harimau, syahbandar, kari, cikalong, made, pak monyet. I have a family tree somewhere. AS to who are the non-family succesors and what do they know...that died with Pak IMHO. All this stuff I got when drinking with him so take my memory with a grain of salt. Sometimes we remember what we want to remember. Anyway...Pak had so much to teach that he taught whatever he wanted and in different ways to different people. He said that he would know what the level and position of a student was by watching him do a signature move he taught. So he would say do your combangan and he would think oh yeah this guys on this track... I think that here in So Cal we were one of his early groups who learned of Pak through the Inosanto Acad. Eventhough we did not have the universal heavyness of contact like in the 70's there was still plenty, i.e. more contact was found more isolated in specific classes than in 1974 you walked though the door and stuck your mouthpiece in as you bow to the picture of SiGung Lee. To that end we learned many combative moves as opposed to history, combangan etc... I'm sure that Pak could see our eyes glaze over when he started history class and usually ended up thinking "forget it" and saying..."O.K. do this" and we were happy to make up our own names for stuff he taught. I talked to him more over a beer than I ever did in all the classes I was lucky enough to have. I think you will train with 10 Pak Herman Mande Muda instrutors and learn ten different things 10 differnet ways. Some instructors are more fighters and some are more textbooks. It is anyone's guess as to who they are. Perhaps the new Mande Mude successors have tried to formulate a cohesive method and curriculim. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. At first it looked almost magical, but upon closer inspection, he was using his amazingly strong toes to pull himself across the mat. Wild. 2) I was stupid enough to ask him to show me a pressure point on my arm. When he applied pressure, I hit the ground instantly as if I had dropped dead on my feet. 3) He had my forearm clamped with his leg behind his knee(he had giant calves that made the his locks very tight) and I was unable to open my hand. The guy was awesome.
