There were quiet a few instructors that the late Herman Suwanda trained (1980-86, 1987-1990 then the Jagabaya program which I believe started after 1992). He taught different styles with the different groups. During the time I was able to train under him in 1987-1990 his emphasis was on; Cimande, Cikalong, Syahbandar and Paleradan. Let me know if you need the names of the instructors between 1980 and 1990 only. I left L.A. in 1990 and was not really active in the Mande Muda organization after that. Regards, Louie D. It was an extreme pleasure. Crafty, I have footage of some nice Krabi Krabong structure between two fighters(1 being Mike) and someones leg being paralyzed for a few minuites after a direct shot to the leg. I know you would enjoy it. ~Chad W. Getz Stickfighting Hawaii http://groups.yahoo.com/group/stickfighting --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! This is an interesting comment. Was the idea of a "challenge match" a strong tradition, or accepted practice amongst the Indonesians that practiced Silat? Also, if it is an accepted practice, did it make it's way to the states? The reason I ask is because I've heard mention of challenges taking place at certain Silat gatherings due to bad blood between either groups or individuals. I don't have any concrete info...just little things I've heard. Does anybody have any knowledge of these types of matches taking place either here or in Indonesia? --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Cplr50@aol.com Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 19:40:04 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re:Looking for a CT instructor/School/Garage session Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey Goup, I've recently moved to the Danbury, CT area and am looking for a new place to hang my hat at. I did my homework and checked out the instructors on Ray's resource page, but alas none are too close. I'm an eclectic type of guy so style is'nt tooo important. However, I am trying to keep with the stick based and filipino styles. Thanks Group Steve Stone --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Mike Casto" To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Silat Challenges Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2003 20:04:39 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I remember a couple of stories that Pak Herman told at seminars that kind of relate to this. Per my memory of Pak Herman's stories (please forgive any errors in my recollection): "A guy came to train with us from another school. Dad wanted to see if he was sincere about training or just spying on us. He told me to go break his leg. I broke his leg. When he came back to train, we assumed he was sincere about training with us." "When I was about 15, I got beaten really badly by a guy. My dad said, 'You fight him again next week.' I was baffled. I knew the guy would just beat me up again the next week. Dad set up the fight, then trained me mercilessly over the next week. Just before the fight, dad dipped my hand in cocoa butter, then spread acid over my palm. He said, 'Quick. Go fight before the acid eats through to your skin.' I rushed out, slapped the guy in the face, his skin melted from the acid, and the fight was over. My hand was smoking and people started yelling, 'Herman has magic!' I wanted to tell them, 'No. Not magic. My dad's just a mean old bastard." And then, not a challenge situation, but funny nonetheless, there was the thief that Pak Uyuh (Herman's dad) caught in their house. His dad told the thief, "I can call the cops and you go to jail. Or you can stay and be our training dummy for a week, then I'll let you go. And if you escape during that week, you'll be free to go." The thief, not wanting to do jail time (Indonesian prisons are *bad*), agreed to the second choice, thinking that he might be able to escape. It was Herman's job to make sure the guy didn't escape. I think Herman said he was 13 or 14 at the time. Herman said, "It was great! The guy fought really hard. He really wanted to escape. Good training for me."
