I think it was a > seminar at the Inosanto Academy where Pak Herman locked up with the class. I do remember that night, but as impressed as I was, I'm the wrong man to discuss his groundwork. His ability to escape locks that were already "On" was extraordinary BTW. When he was still around, due to a combination of knuckleheadedness and physical limitations caused by my knee injury of 1992 ( the consequences of which--twisted hips that were always in pain and frequently dislocated-- I have only really fixed in the last two years) I did not explore this material very much. Now that my body is sounder I pay more attention when Guro I goes over this material in Silat class. One of the reasons eskrima is such powerful >combat system is that it is jungle combat. The phillipines has been the >forge of great fighters for centuries. Of course there are dangerous >areas. But then again there is Palawan, a tourist center for the rich. >The pilipinos should never feel they have to defend against negative >perceptions of their country. The Philippines has always been a violent place. Often the violence is hidden from foreigners but it's there. The longer you live in a place the more you see. In the past (as a foreigner) if you were unlucky in you might have been subjected to a random act of violence. Today, there is a much higher risk that you could be subjected to some form of organized terrorism. If you are security conscious don't go to places were foreigners congregate. Avoid bars, clubs and shopping centres etc. It seems a common misconception that Escrima is based around jungle combat. Most Filipinos are urban dwellers or live in small villages. Don't expect all (many) FMA masters honed their skills in the jungle. It's a little known fact that the Australian Army has trained Filipino soldiers in "jungle warfare at the Australian Army Regional Training Centre" previously "Land Warfare Centre" at Canungra, Queensland. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
