As number one son it was his obligation to carry on the system, represent the system, and honor it by beating any comer. Anybody can take this one. This is an interesting comment. Was the idea of a "challenge match" a strong tradition, or accepted practice amongst the Indonesians that practiced Silat? " Craig, I don't know of any Silat or Escrima challenges per se. You hear storys but never anything you can confirm and nothing I have ever seen. There are lots of fishing stories out there. Did I ever tell you the story of how I caught a 100lbs Tarpon on my trout pole? I think most "challenges" etc... are more likely to be stupid things you do in youth. I am sure my life paralleled the lives of most males where you get in the most fights under 20 year old. Then you mouth off the most between 20-35. 35-45 suddenly you realize there are lots of really skilled people out there and you tend to shut up and pick your battles. 45 and beyond..."go ahead and beat your chest"..."I've been there done that". Think about this...lets say you are 20 year old in a small indo village and you fight herman. 1) you get your ass kicked...no glory there. or 2) you get lucky and win...then everyone else wants to challenge you. No thanks...someone else can have all the glory I'll just train. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. Torrance, Ca. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Mike Casto" To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] ??challenges?? Doc Fung and others who trained with Pak will probably remember hearing this. "In America, everyone want to be #1. In Indonesia, no one want be #1. If you #1, you get attacked. In Indonesia, it better to be #2 or #3." Yesterday the wife and I had a huge fight, and believe me we rarely ever fight, in almost 13 years I can count the number of arguments on one hand. Well yesterday my lovely wife, who is very intelligent and a very good Martial artist did something that sent me thru the roof. I was stuck in Detroit doing Jury duty. My wife was taking care of our pool and spa store. I call her during break, she informs me that the insurance man had come in and inspected our building, basement, store room, alarm box and everything. I asked her what the hell she was talking about I had no appointment with an insurance man, when I asked her his name, she didn't know I said what did his business card say, she didn't know, by now I am getting pissed. Then I found out he didn't even know who owned the building. She basically let a total stranger into our building, to roam free, without any proper identification. Now this is insane for an intelligent, trained woman to take such a risk was plain stupid. So as a reminder for the gals and the guys, before you let anyone in your home or place of business, make sure who they are and what they are doing. I was so pissed I took my hot rod out for a ride in the middle of the winter, and it has never been out of the garage before May, I just had to get out for a while, I can't believe she would take such a risk!!! Remember this from the Book of Rock "Common sense is more important than ability when it comes to self defense, don't put yourself in stupid positions and you will less likely have to use your ability"..... The world is full of enough twisted people no use making things easier for them. Well at least I got some good butt kissing out of it, and I gotta fig that this is worth at least a couple of get out of the dog house free passes :-) Rocky P.S my children, have a play room in the back of my business, so this total stranger knows the lay out of our business, and that we have children here. It has already cost me $400.00 to change my alarm box, and reposition my close circuit system better safe than sorry! --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "rocky pasiwk" To: Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2003 11:33:26 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Attacking Blocks, Dogzilla, Katch Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Chad, you did a very nice job in explaining further, you idea of an attacking block, nice job and I think we are on the same wave length. " I bet that scares you! " As for Dogzilla I must admit that who ever he is he definitely has the coolest of the DBM guys names. Just the envisioning a guy named Dogzilla is enough to scare the bejesus outta you!!! Tom Furman asked about the Katch videos. Well Tom sorry I will be touring this fall hopefully and I will teach some, but I have no intentions to make a tape simply because I am not good enough. I was two worried about wanting to be Bruce Lee when I was a kid and never listen to my father enough. Now I realize that my father was a much more seasoned and experienced fighter and is who I should have been listening to, but you know what they say about hind sight. Upon arrival in the U.S., he first started teaching Mande Muda in San Francisco and Santa Cruz, California. Among his early students were; Steve Hunting, Rennie Saunders, Bruce Irving to name a few. Training at that time period was more on Cimande and Paleradan. After 1985 he moved to the Los Angeles area to work for a plastic manufacturing company in Santa Monica and lived in Venice. He then started teaching Sunday mornings at the Inosanto Acacemy in Marina del Rey. Among the students at that time were Burt Richardson, Ernie Garcia, Barbara Barnes, Nemorio and Bruce Irving. There were also a few drop-in's. After training it was the usual Thai or Mexican food in Marina del Rey. He also loved watching sci-fi movies at the mini-mall near the Inosanto Academy near Maxella. He conducted his first seminar at the Inosanto Academy in 1988. >From there he moved the class to his backyard in Venice and then moved it again to the backyard of one of his students in Culver City. Emphasis during this time was on Cimande, Cikalong, Paleradan and Pamacan. He had his first Silat training camp in Morro Bay for both students from Northern California and L.A. He also did a demo at the IMB Academy with Sifu/Guro Richard Bustillo present. He was only supposed to do a 10-minute demo but instead it went over an hour as the students enjoyed what he was sharing. I remember he being put on a headlock and he simply bit him in the stomach. Everybody was laughing and clapping ! This was sometime in 1987. Unfortunately, we were not able to organize a class at the IMB. He also trained a group of students that competed in the 1987 World Silat Championships in Malaysia. It was in 1989 that he started his interest in video productions and produced a few documentaries on Silat. He also started talking about the planned JAGABAYA program. In 1991 or 1992 he decided to go back to Indonesia for business but then decided to go back to the US to promote Mande Muda again. He also conducted his first Canadian workshops in Vancouver in 1992 and 1995. He was a truly gifted Silat practitioner and teacher and I am sure he has influenced a lot of people in their training. Feel free to e-mail if you need more information about the late Herman Suwanda and his Art. Please note that I can only provide information on or before 1990. Regards, Louie D. One was purely for show or stage and the other was called matador, used for fighting. In training recently, one of my seniors began altering the training and pursued the drill at almost full speed. At that point I realized the difference between drilling and using the skill in real time. A big thanks to Guro Rutano, Mr. Richardson and my senior for making this point clearer.
