Proper lunging it seems to me is essential for a weapon with a sharp point. Balestra and Fleshe on a straight strip are a great supplement for the angling footwork of the Filipino arts. It was interesting to me to see a numbering system that was defensive sectoring rather than "angles of attack". Although constrained by rules, the competitive aspect brings Fencing to a very high skill level. Unlike other sports, high level champions are accessible to the motivated novice. I liked the hard sparring without getting hurt and the camaraderie that intense fencing brings. It was helpful in broadening my perspective of the history of the weapon arts as well. I tried all three weapons, and found the Epee most fun, and the Saber the biggest challenge. Also, electronic scoring is a gas. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello All, Been lurking here for awhile since I started taking FMA. My school reflects the different skill levels using a sash system. It is a good visual aid for organizing activities during class. I had my test yesterday for the first level, and passed the test, yet not with the efficiency I normally perform when in regular class. I know the material, done it a thousand times. My Guro has watch me perform the techniques and felt I was ready, and I also thought I was ready. Yet, during about 15% of the test I looked like a deer in someone's headlights. I could not associate the name of the technique with the technique. It was like my brain just went South. I was so embarrassed I wish I was somewhere else. What really hurt was that I believe I embarrassed my Guro, and a high ranking student who I reviewed with before taking the test. Even though I have never choked on the street, or free fighting I did miserably in performing the techniques on command. I spoke to my Guro after class and he said he was a little surprised about my performance during the test since he knows I know the material, and said I did Ok. I am thinking about not accepting my first level sash, and staying in the beginners' class until I can perform all the techniques on command. I know there are a lot of Guro's on this news group and would appreciate some input. Would not accepting the the first level sash be insulting my Guro? Thanks in advance for your input. Ray ========================================================== Just a very short write-up of the recent 18th International Hapkido and KMA Seminar held over the weekend in Jackson, MS, hosted by Gm JR West and the various mutants that for whatever reason frequent West's Hapkido Academy. The event began Friday afternoon with the kick-punch guyz doing their normal pre-event workout. These folks just can't seem to get enough, so they start early to make sure they receive just the correct amount of weekend punishment. Segments over the weekend covered Striking Techniques (Master Mac), Grabbing Your Behind (Master Instructor Propst), ohh wait, I think that was really supposed to be Grabs from Behind... The Pen as a Weapon (Master Geoff "Call me Jay Leno" Booth), Palm Striking (Gm Timmerman), Advanced Wrist Techniques (Gm West), Ground Techniques (Master Lyons), Closing Distance/Attacking (Master Instructor Dr. Tavassoli), Kicking for Self-Defense (Gm Hodder), Cane Techniques (Master Hilland), Choke Defense (Master Instructor Borucki), Pressure Points (Wayne "Mean Old Man" Watkins), Speed Takedowns (Master Instructor "and Martial Arts Novice" Mangum) [you had to be there], Military Techniques (Gm West), Carry Techniques (Gm West), Kick Defense and Gm West's Black Belt HKD class. I also did some knife stuff. If I left someone out, sorry, not intentional. Just too few brain cells firing this morning... Great to see some old (and I do mean old) friends again and make some new ones (e.g. the "LA Boyz", Chris, Vic, etc, etc, [see aforementioned brain cell thing again]). I seem to recall that the upcoming August event will be in September... now I'm really confused. Time for a nap... It is not up to you, except it and the responsibilitys it entails. Dont freak out because you feel you had brain freeze during your test, we all do its natural.Personally I still freeze up when Im in front of seniors ( and Ive been in the art 20+ years) . Some people are just not into taking tests but its a part of life and we have to strive to get better at it as we go along. But as for you not accepting the first level, dont do that to yourself, youve earned it and in the eyes of your Guro you should have it. Mike B. PTK --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Mike Casto" To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Choked on Test. Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2003 12:36:59 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net A lot of people have test anxiety. One of my peers was horrible about it. He choked horribly on every single test. He would just get so nervous and flustered that he'd lock up. Outside of the testing environment, though, he was completely on top of his game and most definitely not someone I'd ever want to fight. When it came for our instructorship test (he and I tested together), we all thought that he would choke again and either totally lock up or end up killing his uke (which was, in some cases, me). I don't know what happened but he did beautiful on that test. Tests, really, are a kind of tempering process. And, in my experience, they're a progressive thing. On the first test, I (as an instructor) expect some students to choke. It's inevitable. And I'll pass them through the first test even if they completely suck, as long as they give me their best effort. They wouldn't be testing in the first place if I didn't feel they were ready. But I do retest them on sections where they have trouble. After that, they have a better idea of what the testing is like. And, generally, on their second test, they can relax a little more and do a little better. As they advance, I get less lenient in the testing. And, usually, they get more comfortable, confident, and relaxed and they meet not only my expectations but, more importantly, their own expectations. I don't know whether refusing the belt would insult your Guro or not. Depends on your Guro and your relationship with him. But I wouldn't recommend it. If he says you're ready to promote then have faith in him. But learn from the problems you had on the test. Work on ways of overcoming that test anxiety. One thing that I think helped my friend (the one I mentioned previously) is this. He was stressing horribly about a week before our instructor's test. I was talking to him and another friend, Dave (the guy who was our primary uke on the test). Dave said, "Don't think of it as a test. Just think of it as a really strenous workout session." It was like a switch had been thrown. Something clicked and, like I said, the guy did wonderfully on his instructorship test. Don't know if that might help you or not, but that's my 2 cents. Take care and remember, in the FMA, "flow" is the foundation. I've done a bit of epee, but lately I've starting doing SCA fencing. This is a type of fencing that is done in a wide area, as oppose to working on a straight line. It also commonly implements the use of an off-hand weapon, such as a dagger, cloak, or baton. My martial arts have definitely given me an edge on other beginners, since I already have many different concepts to draw from, such as trapping, faking, split entries, etc. My martial arts have improved from it, not necessarily in any direct way, but just the same as from any cross training; you have to think about different ways of getting past a guard, you improve your spatial intelligence (depth perception), you learn new things to adapt to empty hand/other weapons, but most of all, giving you a improved understanding on combat as a whole. ________________________________________________________________ Get your own evilemail.com address at http://www.evilemail.com --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "bill m" To: Date: Wed, 12 Mar 2003 22:20:48 -0800 Subject: [Eskrima] Pekiti-Tirsia video Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To all those you ordered the Pekiti-Tirsia demo video after the offer I made in my last post.
