Woof, Crafty Dog PS: Concerning choking on tests: In a related vein I often still choke when Guro I. calls on me in class. Concerning refusing the promotion-- I recognize the feeling, I had it very strongly one time upon a belt level promotion in another system. I just didn't think I deserved it and shared my concerns with the teacher. "Well," he said "you'll just have to train harder until you do." --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2003 12:56:42 -0500 (EST) From: gordon walker To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] choked on test Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello all, I had a belt test in 1997 that went very bad. I had to get stitches after walking into Mr. Johnson's technique. Five above the left eye. It adds character to an otherwise ugly face I think. I felt that embarrased about the whole test situation. I hid quietly in the corner, kind of ashamed. This was after returning from the emergency room. I refused the ranking at first, because it didnt feel quite right to be promoted to such a high rank without the skill level to back it up. I accepted the ranking about a month later, after I realized that it was given to me by someone who believed in me. I have since trained with the senior instructor and he was very surprised by my improvement. Then I felt that I had earned the ranking. I guess he knew that I would grow into it. He may see what you don't. It's his decision whether or not to pass you, not yours. If he does, accept it with grace. That's the correct thing to do. Then prove him right by working to the best of your ability. My teacher, Punong Guro Mat Marinas  has a saying: "Not everyone can be the valedictorian, but everyone can do their best" So do your best in your art and good luck on your future tests.                                                            Rob Mulligan                                                            Queens, NY P.S.: Remember, this is FMA, so just make sure you learn to fight; that's what counts. The rest is icing on the cake.                             ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2003 19:27:04 -0800 (PST) From: Luis Pellicer To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] re : CHOKED Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net //What really hurt was that I believe I embarrassed my Guro, and a high ranking student who I reviewed with before taking the test. Even though I have never choked on the street, or free fighting I did miserably in performing the techniques on command.// Maybe it's a difference of outlook, as long as you think you can survive an encounter and you have proven that you respond to an attack effectively without thought, performing a technique on command is irrelevant. I've met alot of people with huge repertiors of techniques, who can't fight. All depends on where you want to go, and where your teacher wants to take you. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
