Fwd: re authenticity of the term "Kali" and Tatang Ilustrisimo (jose saguisabal) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 21:26:48 -0800 (PST) From: Karol Krauser To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] reply to training both hands. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I find training both hands immeasurably valuable. My training partner Bobee Edmonds and I are comfortable enough with each other that we have worked on various ways of doing this which makes this a realistic but yet very fun and challenging practice. We usually practice Doce Pares close range sparring using a few of the following drills. Sometimes we will spar right handed for a few rounds then left and then finally just flowing with whichever side seems natural. This means sometimes we are both on the right, some times both, on left and other times completely opposite or in transition the main thing that is worked on is the constant flow no matter what happens. We still have a strong side side, but after you train both sides and start picking up disarms, locks, and throws out of flow on either side a whole other world opens up. This free flow sparring really transcends into empty hand as well. It helps to start off slow in the beginning, leave your ego and competitive nature outside the door and have a partner that is as interested in helping you as he is in his own growth. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I have had some neck pain for some time now and I am looking for a person who does Hilot. Perferably in L.A. but if not at least somewhere in California. I did not mean to offend or make false statements, as my comments were made based on what I could remember about the subject. First, I would like to apologize for any misinformation one may have taken away from my post. I had already done so with a teacher of Kalis Illustrisimo, and, with his permission, I would like to post the e-mail exchanges between us as I believe it pertains to the discussion about the late GM Tatang Illustrisimo and "Kali": -- --------- Forwarded Message --------- DATE: Tue, 25 Mar 2003 10:31:24 From: John Chow To: jose saguisabal Hi Jay, You wrote (about Tatang Ilustrisimo) :- Apparently he'd read Inosanto's book also, as he claims that his style came from a Moslem Haji, which has no connection to the martial arts (as I am told by my Moslem friends). I am unaware Tatang Ilustrisimo ever claimed this. His style has always been a family style. Apart from his father and uncle, his only other teacher possibly was his father's friend and training partner Pedro Cortes in Mindanao. I have also read that Dan Inosanto's book. However, I do not see any stated connection between Floro Villabrialle and a "Moslem Haji" as his teacher, nor can I draw any inference that Tatang, on reading Dan's book got a marvelous idea to adopt the tactic of Filipino migrant masters to jump on the "Moslem" bandwagon (seems to be what is implied?). In fact, we have never heard Tatang Ilustrisimo claim "his style came from a Moslem Haji". This is the first time we have heard this, and not from Tatang, neither the circle of his closest students. What is your source? I do agree with the gist of what you are trying to imply, generically though, and only generically, that many migrant masters or those who have some connection with the West have attempted to jump on this "Kali is older and better" promotional fasade (?) and some also try to put on the gown of mysterious and deadly "moslem" SILAT and KUNTAO. Yes, I am really amused at their stated official histories (I learnt from my grandfather ....... - they never showed much evidence of their previous famous prowess - seem to be very skillful in hiding their "secret family art" while learning until they are good enough, and then, they somehow do not need to keep their family art a secret anymore ....etc). That ........... do I heartily agree. However, I do not agree to include Tatang Ilustrisimo under this "clsasification", as it is known and established from independent sources that Tatang Ilustrisimo has a pedigree family lineage. A well known fact. He did not need to invent the story of his uncle or grandfather. His uncle Melecio Ilustrisimo was well known in northern Cebu, and even up to Luzon, I think. it is a fact to refer to, no need to invent his story. But, quite a few other masters, including Kung Fu masters, you are dead right about them. I write this without malice, and I bear no malice towards you even though your 2 public posts does insinuate something about Tatang Ilustrisimo. (The other issue is about the Spanish terms within Kalis Ilustrisimo - which I already previously explain to somebodyesle, so I do not wish to waste my time and energy re-writing again) Regards, John Chow --------- End Forwarded Message --------- _____________________________________________________________ Get 25MB, POP3, Spam Filtering with LYCOS MAIL PLUS for $19.95/year. http://login.mail.lycos.com/brandPage.shtml?pageId=plus&ref=lmtplus --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
