Here are some recent movie reviews Gumagalang Guro Steve L. James Kendrick, Q Network Film Desk The resulting knife fight between them is one of the most exhilarating and frightening depictions of violence recently committed to film. Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio Del Toro, two steely actors with enough heavy-lined character in their faces for a dozen men, both bring a sense of heavy physicality to the action, and Friedkin never shies away from the gory results of a blade cutting through human flesh. There is nothing beautiful about any of it, yet it’s utterly captivating in a base, animalistic sense. Roger Ebert • THUMBS UP! Chicago Sun Times We've seen so many fancy high-tech computer-assisted fight scenes in recent movies that we assume the fighters can fly. They live in a world of gravity-free speed-up. Not so Friedkin's characters. Their fight is gravity-based. Their arms and legs are heavy. Their blows Land solidly, with pain on both sides. They gasp and grunt with effort. They can be awkward and desperate. They both know the techniques of hand-to-hand combat, but in real life, it isn't scripted, and you know what? It isn't so easy. We are involved in the immediate, exhausting, draining physical work of fighting. The resulting knife fight, which benefits from the earlier knife training sequence, is physical action of a high order. Walter Chaw, Film Freak Central The strength of the picture is in the rude, blunt physicality of its fight sequences (particularly its final showdown that should endure as one of the bloodiest onscreen knife fights in history) Larry Ratliff, San Antonio Express-News Jones and Del Toro battle in more than one impressive knife and hand-to-hand combat scene. That keeps blood pumping in the audience as blood spills on screen. and...Fight scenes keep adrenaline flowing in 'The Hunted Ben Nickols, Associated Press The fight scenes really cook: Del Toro and Jones are convincing as knife experts who know every way imaginable to disable the human body. The professionalism on display in every aspect of ``The Hunted'' is admirable; _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "al sardinas" To: Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2003 07:50:44 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] I Saw "The Hunted" Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Regarding Nicholas Stevens question "Anyone seen the hunted?", I saw it and IMO it does not do Sayoc Kali any justice. If you saw the preview of the movie, you saw almost all the Sayoc Kali. The movie is okay and it qualifies as a rip-off of the Fugitive and First Blood. I would be interested in knowing how much if any of the Sayoc Kali footage was left on the cutting floor. I have to assume that Mike Castro gave a good description of what he saw of Sayoc Kali because I don't know Sayoc Kali. But I can tell you that the total amount of fighting (Sayoc Kali) was very short about 5 minutes so don't blink if you go to watch this less than 90 minutes movie. Finally, see Exposure with Peter Coyote it is a much better movie. Among compadres in the same art/class, the word "play" (as I was brought up to understand it) can mean anything from basic practice to a friendly engagement (sparring). But, to an unknown player, to ask them if they "want to play?" can and probably will be interpreted as a challenge. Given he has been around longer, met more people, etc, he may have info for you that Diony doesn't. Worth a try. Strangely enough, if you send a letter to Cacoy Canete, Doce Pares, Cebu City, Cebu, RP, he will get it. Everyone knows him there...
