What type of swords have you seen? Barong? Kris? Bolo? I have two displays of various filipino swords on a wall. The 24" bahi stick I received from Mike Inay (similar to the type Angel gave some of his students) is as long as the five barongs, about one inch shorter than the five kris, and about 2 inches longer than the bolo. But this stick is shorter than the kampilans that I have. Ray, All kinds. However, it is kinda like the croc dundiee scene "this is a knife!". I think for sowrd as 31" Giron stick length. The sword blade is not my prefered blade. I like a long sword and 9-12 inch dagger. The greater the mismatch the more the underestimation of the live hand. The typical serrada stick is short 2ft or bit less and small diameter less than 1 inch..at least that is what I have seen used mostly. Even the smaller swords are not that light and the small serrada stick IMO does not give the feel of a short sword. If the intention of Serrada is to translate the blade attributes then I would think one would use a tool that better represents it. That's all there is to my point. One weapon is not better than the other. It can be done either way but learning to shoot at ducks by only shooting at quail is a little tricky to learn. -- __--__-- I wonder if Ray Terry's juxtaposition of the posts by Carlton H. Fung DDS and Rob Mulligan (on different topics) was (brilliantly) deliberate. Fung wrote "Really Eskrima in America is all sport which represents something martial just like TKD." Rob Mulligan wrote "...but these are REAL warrior techniques that are meant to help us survive life and death situations. It's NOT a game." Same coin, two sides? Tweak a deadly martial art and it becomes a sport? Well you can turn anything into what ever you want. Personally I have trained about as radically as you can get starting with the heavy contact in the 70's and no gear too. I can probably hold my own but It is all a sport until you really use it. What we do is little different than combat .45 shooting. Being good here means nothing when the room is dark you are surpised and the adrenaline is pumping. Sure train as you fight...fight as you train blah blah blah but at the end of the day the only real fighters are those who have done it. Most of use think we are pretty tough but most of this same group does not fight for life they work for a living. There is a huge difference. We can repect the warrior way and we can emulate it but none of us really live it. Even instructors on this board teach and mention things like Ca liability issues now how martial are those statements. You see what I mean? The 19 y/o in Iraq with 3 months of boot camp is martial putting his life on the line. All I can say is I have 30 years of fooling around with a stick in comfort and safety of my buddies at the Dojo. And to those who start to bring in the discussion of stick or blade art I just don't get the point. Anyone with a little understanding can get how blade translates to stick and vice versa. There is no higherarchy in we are a blade art or we are a stick art. You do know what tool is right for the job but you can still hit a golf ball with a baseball bat or a hockey stick or a bar b que spatula. Respectfully, Carl Carlton H.
