I'm generally there for a good time and my idea of a good time does not include getting hurt, or hurting some. 2) Swallow my pride...I could really care less what anyone thinks of me, call me a wimp..."Okay I'm a wimp can I get back to my beer now?" 3) I try not to frequent establishments where I would likely meet trouble. 4) Unless its my family, I tend not to get physically involved...but I do make a great witness when the police/sheriff show up..."IP1 (Involved Person 1) punched IP2 after IP2..." 5) In bars/nightclubs, I secure my folder in the car, along with my attitude (see #1). To quote GM Estalilla: "No matter how deadly you art is, it must be done within the sphere of good motives, behind a background of peaceful intentions." Respectfully, Anthony Manansala Estalilla Kabaroan WOR ___________________ Message: 6 From: "McDonald, Jon" To: "'eskrima@martialartsresource.net'" Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 15:56:59 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] Drinking while carrying a knife & carrying in a bar Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all, Reading about this NYC incident has gotten me thinking about those who carry knives on their person all the time (I don't, primarily because I am neither sufficiently skilled with one nor sufficiently knowledgeable about my state's laws concerning them). Do those of you who carry knives ever drink alcohol while carrying? I would assume that due to the relative size of and social meaning with carrying a firearm as opposed to carrying a knife one would be (purposely or inadvertantly) much more aware about what they consume when armed with a firearm as opposed to a blade. Also does carrying a knife cause you guys to avoid going to certain places the way carrying a firearm might? I know I've seen tons of people with folders in bars, but I would think that many people carrying firearms would avoid those types of places while armed (also, is it against the law, in certain states, to carry a firearm into a bar?). Bars and nightclubs seem to be the most likely area where adults find themselves engaged in fist-fights. Between the combination of increased likelihood for confrontation and the probable decreased view of legal justification for self-defense by a jury, the risk for bringing a firearm or a knife would be pretty high. If you chose not to bring those weapons into a bar, what do you do? Do you go to bars and nightclubs unarmed, or do you simply avoid those places all together? Just wondering about those issues. Thanks, Jon __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. The only equipment they carry > on their belt is an expandable baton and pepper sray. It depends... (1) If we can assume that the LEO in question will not practice a lot with their baton/stick (unfortunately the norm) we still use the baton from the strong/dominate/rear hand. However, if the LEO is an active student, i.e. trains at least a time or two -every- week, then use of the baton in the lead/weak hand is what we recommend. (2) If the person is very strong handed, or in other words a complete spaz with their off hand, then we stay with the strong hand. Some have more closely matched hands. Others, like me, are far more coordinated with their strong hand than with their off hand. As for bars I avoid them completely but in restaurants I still carry my MOD "Razorback." --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Joey Marana" To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Re: Knives and drinking Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2003 15:42:53 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I also have an all steel Spyderco. One technique that also seems to work is clipping it to the cuff of a jacket, shirt, or better yet, the shirt inside the jacket cuff. I hope that makes sense. This location is rarely frisked and it leaves your weapon easily at your hand's disposal. I have just gotten my two books on Modern Arnis printed in hard copy form. They are: De-fanging The Snake: A Guide To Modern Arnis Disarms and Advanced Modern Arnis: A Road To Mastery. They were previously only in CD ROM form but I got a lot of requests for them in actual book form. You can go to www.danandersonkarate.com for more info.
