OK, I hear you asking, what has that to do with FMA? I admit that the chapter on ice-making probably very little. However, I found the physics of striking the puck with a stick fascinating and directly applicable to our ways. The chapter on bodies colliding and the results thereof is also interesting. I think the book will appeal to those who like to study the science behind the arts. And to those who like hockey... The other is a copy of the Malaysian, Filipino, Indonesian, cock spur. I believe it is also called Lawi Ayam and several other names. It is a hooked blade, probably from agricultural use.(cutting the base of plant?) You may want to contact Bram Frank about the Gunteen, he invented it. He hangs out on the Spyderco.com bulletin board. For Kerambit, try a Mande Muda student or a Sayoc practitioner. While we are on the subject, I really like Fred Perrin's designs of small blades. His ideas may be the wave of the future in terms of carrying/legality. Those small blades make you reassess your guard, mount, 100kilo, and North-South position, when you fall to the ground with a bad guy. I received some nice feedback on the Sayoc board about Perrin's LaGriffe. Anybody out there been experimenting with Perrin's blades?? If anyone is interested in weapons fighting/sparring, please contact me. Here's my basic, and scarcely updated web site: Gints Fighting Club http://home.att.net/~gints/home.htm We fight every other Tuesday night. On the remaining Tuesdays, we do drills & conditioning. On fight nights, we fight, videotape the session, and review immediately afterwards. We're in Menlo Park, which is smack between San Jose and San Francisco, CA. That's five miles south of San Mateo, the city in question. Both knife is have a differences but the opening and closing is not really importance to us. A nice sharp edge is all right, cant be picky. Pick the most cheaper one does the same job of the expensive knife. Both knife is killer knife and both knife is expensive. What wrong with the regular folding knife, I believed is also can be open quickly as the mentioned knife. Just my opinion learn how to disarm and used the knife but dont bring and think that knife is your only for your personal defense. Once you carry a knife your intention is different that jus a self defense. You are assuming someone will attack you, if you are a gentlemen and you are good person, no one will bother you unless you are running to someone else. Look what happen in NY with the bouncer two week ago, this is not a good idea. If someone attack you with a knife and you able to disarm the knife and you used it that different story. Cover your A$$ always, that's good defense. Be well hope it help. # In regard to the question of Steven Drape, if we back our art 50/50 chances to win or to survive, something like this. My Opinion: Yes, I back it up my arts not only 50/50 percent more or less 99.9 percent. Most of the knife fighting I seen practiced here in the US is based of the closed combat tactics, and have negative and positive result. In close range combat if both practitioner beginner or advance has a 50/50 chance to cut himself or kill each other. If their both good both of them is dead then there is no winner. In our system, we practiced rigorously in close tactics to get familiar inside and outside of the range. Since the closed range is the most difficult range, chances are to get cut. We favor Largo Mano 99.9% which meticulous angle of the body and precise execution of footwork as you counter an attack or defense will result a distance that I am able and effectively cut, slash, thrust or stub my opponent outside his effective range. Scientifically studied the angle of the footwork based on the real triangle footwork's, that make the body to able to face our opponent without hesitation and gained full competence to our techniques 99.9%. Most practitioner and teacher is trying to get in to our inside range our focus is to get his angle out side Largo to take advantage of these unique theory of defenses, which I effectively used it from my numerous street fight and Tournaments and the result is 99.9%. You dont need to be a 6 foot tall or younger to able to used this theory, this is what a lot of FMA is missing to their training. Just a piece of info dont settle for 50/50% if you get a chance to kill your opponent, chances are you also is dead or almost dead. My father GM Felipe "Garimot" Baet said, The Eskrimadores fighter that has a lot of Scar to his body is not considered a good Eskrimadors. He said Arnis is meaning Shield to defenses, and if you cannot avoid a struck of a stick or bolo, there not a good then you just shown your Eskrima and Arnis skill is not good enough. I remembered my Dad used to get upset at me after my bout during my Championship time, even I won the Championship he will asked me. Do you get hit first? I I say yes, then he would tell me you are not a winner, what happen if is real blade already then he cut you first, who knows if you still can move after that first hit. May be one hit that all it take, so next time dont let anyone hit you Okay? I replied (Opo Ama) yes Dad, I feel disappointed to my Dad at that time, but think about it, he is making a lot of sense. We are preparing to the ultimate challenge, the life and death situation, and you would do anything to spare your life to yourself, you have to be a good keeper of this body.
