In particular, I'm interested in ease/speed of deployment. Personally haven't compared the two but have the gunting and think it's the best folder for me and I cant see beyond it. Edges2 also have some great training versions btw. The placement of the knife is my only concern. I have discussed this with both Bram Frank (the inventor of the knife) and Dr Barber. One favours a belt holster made by Frank Olesen The problems with waistband is the size of the gunting and its clip position. I find its too visible and there is a large sticking out thing that can snag! Or even dig into the waist in certain positions ; ). A loose shirt covers it though On sweat pants - which I tend to be in a lot - it's a no no as the waistband needs an element of rigidity due to the effectiveness of the clip. Positioning it in the back of the waistband might be a better position but only for a left hand draw as with my right the 'pointing out bitty' is digging into my palm. BUT I still have to work/practice the draw in these areas so im simply speaking as I go along and not being negative. For the functionality I would like it around my left front waist as I am right handed. If you go to the gunting site there is more than enough on training drills and I like the fact that even after engaging the gunting into action, I can still have a moral choice on whether to engage the blade or not. That is a big plus over other folders. I really like it. I have to say that I really like the LaGriffe as a back-up and surprise type of weapon. It's got amazing cutting power for a blade it's size. Mainly because it's locked in and essentially becomes an extension of your skeletal system. It's almost impossible to disarm, and the passive grip design allows you to grab clothing with your knife hand and still have control of the blade. The more I handle it, the more I like it. The training version is also an excellent non-lethal counter-offensive tool. Guro William Schultz Rhode Island Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Association Mongrel Combative Arts >>While we are on the subject, I really like Fred Perrin's designs of small blades. His ideas may be the wave of the future in terms of carrying/legality. Those small blades make you reassess your guard, mount, 100kilo, and North-South position, when you fall to the ground with a bad guy. I received some nice feedback on the Sayoc board about Perrin's LaGriffe. Anybody out there been experimenting with Perrin's blades?? The rest of the animal kingdom seems to know how to use their jaws. Our structure is more delicate but not that far off. Maybe that's a million years of socialization? Regards, carl Carlton H. I don't carry a blade regularly but the Gunting is the best designed folder I've had to date. I really like the versatility of it. Of course, any folder can be used as a palm stick while closed. But the "kinetic opening" of the Gunting provides a very practical method for moving from "palm stick" to "blade" in the heat of the moment. And I really like that. I know UK is much tougher on us tool guys than here in the states.. If one wants their edged tool open as soon as possible...theres only one answer...Contrary to other responses, no knife can or will open as fast as a wave upon the "NOW".Since a WAVE opens as you enage it that's about physically impossible to beat... If your consideration is that your blade be ready to engage NOW, then there is no other choice but Ernies collection of "wave" powered knives. Bar none. this knife is #1, the reigning king of open "NOW" The Newest Emerson the Kerambit oops Ernie spells it Karambit.. is another Ernie special..Pull it out, finger in the control hole and "NOW" its ready to deploy...it's in reverse grip and hot to trot as they say... Other knives have to be indexed, in hand to then be made to open.. that's at least a 1/2 beat to two beats behind Ernie.. Kerambit-Karambits ask that you be up close and personal... Check out Ernies training program & tapes.. The Gunting? Its a "WHEN".. When do you want it open? Its the fastest accessing tool within the flow because there is no fine motor skill involved..Draw it on the go to slam n jam..It opens Kinetically upon impact BAM!!! "WHEN" you want it to within the flow of combat or usage..Forward OR reverse grip ..it escalates up and down the full force continuum.. That's all part of the patent... It is the ONLY knife with a lock designed to be used against the lock..Other locks are to keep your fingers from being cut off..NOt put pressure against the blade / lock. The Compression lock is designed for making use of the back of the blade, against the lock, for trapping, locking, restraint holds etc..Its patented.. Both knives have less than three inch blades making them common pocket knives,, No, contrary to what was posted they are not both "killers" they are both working tools and MBC-SDR tools....Martial Blade Craft and Self Defense Response tools...there is no killing here...sorry.. Any edged tool can be used to kill..but its not part of the intent nor design of either of these tools. Both come with functional trainer DRones for safe practice.. Both of these tools allow for Bio mechanical shut down, trapping and controlling the bad guy.. The Gunting System comes with Instructional tapes, a training program and its newest member, a non cutting Impact tol version the CRMIPT. This months ASLET review it and recommends it as well as Guns & Weapns for LE which has called it "the best less than lethal tool ever designed for LE".. Police Marksman called it '" the only knife -impact tool designed expressly for the LEO that is defensible in court!" " The best statement arguement for an officer to carry a knife; the Gunting" well you get the idea... I know cause I invented / designed the Gunting & Ernie is a good friend with outrageously good products! And the WAVE and the KinOp are kissing cousins of each other! be safe Bram www,CSSDSC.com www.gunting-museum.com www.S2institute.com --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Gunteen vs Kerambit To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 14:54:45 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > ... Sadly it is only a fair movie. 1 Star. The knife scenes were too short and consisted primarily of basic Kadena de Mano skills. Really hoped to see more. I used to think, as I was going through various Special Forces courses, "Gee I'm actually getting paid to do this." However I disagree strongly with the second part especially the comment, "I am not convinced this is an avenue for positive growth in human potential." Perhaps your experiences with Special Forces is quite a bit different than mine. I spent time in the 1st, 3rd, and 7th SF Groups and as an instructor and training developer at the school house. I currently work as a civilian here at Ft. Bragg, the home of SF. I would have to say that "positive growth in human potential" is one of the main benefits and by products of Special Forces training. If you could please expand upon your comments I would appreciate it. I was also wondering what SF assignments you had? Take care, Robin J.
