It is Steve Tarani who uses the "Karambit" spelling for the knives he designed - a fixed blade by Strider and a folder by Blade-Tech. Interesting and enlightening comments from some VERY knowledgeable folks. Thank you! Heres some of my limited "end user" input for open discussion by the board, I have carried a CRKT Bearclaw /similar to a LaGriffe/ for three of four years now. It comes with a somewhat bulky injection molded sheath and can be mounted upside down via dogtag chain or paracord. This bulk could probably be rectified by one of these Kydex sheath wizards real quickly. Normally the Bearclaw is worn concealed under my work BDU top/ over my vest at sternum level. I also carry a working variation of one of these primary blades; an Emerson CQC-7, mini-Commander, Tarani Folding Kerambit, Worden Folder, or Benchmade AFCK in the RHS pocket ahead of the duty holster due to the mentioned speed of deployment and immediate cutting - thrusting ability. In other words the smaller blade is deployed if general Use of Force guidelines - the Why can't we just be friends talk isn't working, or the Baton, Primary blade/ sidearm have been lost, removed, and the group huggy - Kumbaya sing-a-long - has turning really ugly......... I've tried the Bearclaw with permutations of both the grip panels on, one side removed to flatten the signature, and both removed ala' LaGriffe profile. Presentation is limited to a forefinger type grab with the blade in a quasi sabre fencing grip which to my limited FMA/IMA training does not seem to have the powerbase at X-CQC (Extreme Close Quarters Combat - trendy one huh?) Phone booth dancing, whatever you wish to call it, of the reverse grip. The other factor - for me - having recently begun to amass a small collection of both fixed and folding working Kerambit/Karambits - is the traditional design with the ring slipped over the forefinger and blade held in reverse position seems awful darn secure being locked in from the top, to the bottom, by the entire hand, while executing punching style techniques and is far more secure than the sabre type grip. The LaGriffe styles don't seem to have that ability based on their shorter grip area during the traditional disarms/ wrist grabs. I've made quite a number of my own aluminum drones for both the LaGriffe and Kerambit styles and tried the simple skills learned on various targets, sparring partners, and during "work' related training activities. I'm also interested in the Gunting design but thats for later on..................... Please - if I am wrong, or WAY off base here, please enlighten me, and correct my transgressions. I had heard that Dr. Gyi was coming out with a book on Letha Yoga. Has anyone heard any updates on this? Is his content really that much different from everything else that's out there (you know, the PNF stuff, Tom Kurtz, etc.)? He's such a master of marketing I don't know what to believe... Fair to good at best. As for the knife skills demo-ed fairly basic kadena da mano drills.
