This was the case with Guro Crafty's seminar in Vancouver, BC, this past weekend. Two days' worth of outstanding instruction, wit and wisdom. Many thanks to Guro Crafty for coming north to teach and to Guro Loki Jorgensen for being instrumental in arranging it. I do remember that the grip looked a bit bulky in the photos. The LaGriffe held in a saber style grip, pointer finger through the grip hole and thumb placed on top of the blade, puts the handle securely in the center of your palm (the curve of the grip puts it almost dead center). When you close the hand, the grip gets locked into the palm by your ring and middle finger. The pinky is the only finger not touching the blade. This gives you an extremely stable structure for slashing and especially thrusting. The blade is driven and backed by the palm and placed in-line with the skeletal structure of the arm. A reverse grip is functional, but not quite as strong in a slashing mode as opposed to a hammer fist type of thrust. The grip design that makes it so solid in a saber style grip makes it less than ideal for slashing from a boxing type of attack. Placing your pinky in the grip hole gives you a comfortable grip the would be strong enough for soft targets, but hitting bone is likely to get your pinky damaged or broken. Though, a hammer-fisted attack from that grip is again, very strong. There are pros and cons to the blade, but overall, I like it a lot. Once it’s in my hand, you ain’t getting it out. Also, the passive type grip is a great plus. I can grip it, open my hand completely, and close it again and not drop the knife. That allows me to grab clothing, hold a flashlight or other implement, and still have the blade immediately available. Not too many blades you can say that about.
