My Krabi Krabong instructor, Ajarn Stephen Wilson, is starting up a yahoogroup for the discussion of Thai martial arts - Muay Thai, Muay Thai Boran, Krabi-Krabong and Muay Thai Kacheuk. The URL for the list is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/krabi_krabong Some day Real Soon Now(tm) there will be a website at http://www krabikrabong.us and http://www.chalambok.com Regards, Todd --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "hyperedge" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Home defense Date: Fri, 9 May 2003 22:46:40 -0700 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > While police were arresting Randy Cantwell, 16, of 802 S.E. 80th St., Thompson > struck Cantwell at least two more times before police were able to back him off. > > Cantwell was treated at Mercy Medical Center, then charged. > Are you saying that once the police took over, that Cantwell laid some home runs on the kid. If that is true, I am surprised that Cantwell did not get arrested for aggravated assault and interfering with a police officer. Also the kid's parents could financially ruin this guy. People do stupid things when they think they are covered by self defense. In most states just defending your property is not enough to use deadly force. I am sure some scum bag lawyer is talking to the kids parents about pain and suffering, being scarred for life, ... where big bad Cantwell assaulted with malice poor little Johnny even after it was determined that Johnny was unarmed and had no weapon. In civil court the plaintiff only has to show that there is ONLY a 51% probability that the defendant is the cause of the resulting lose to win the case. (NO shadow of doubt, 49% loses $$$$$$$) >I find the whole incident inspirational. Before you get to inspired, if you anticipate ever being in a situation where you use deadly force or something close to it, know what you legally can do. Know the different between criminal and civil court. Understand police forensics, so not to make a liar out of yourself. Have the basic story line elements in your head that shows your actions are reasonable/justified under the law, and be ready to incorporate them into any real story you may have to tell. Winning in court can be harder than winning on the street. Sometimes bad guys win and good guys loose. Protect yourself with knowledge and forethought first. Then you can be inspired. Sorry, I am not trying to be an asshole, just throwing in 2 cents worth. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: MarkLugtu@aol.com Date: Sat, 10 May 2003 04:10:43 EDT Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Home defense To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net its a good thing that the home owner wasnt charged. here in england a farmer shot a person trying to break in to his house and was charge and convicted. i'm not sure if the burgler died but the police said he placed the law into his own hands. im not sure i agree with the police this time but i guess there are really differences in how you interpret law in every country. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
