Being in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), almost all we do is what is concidered "free sparring" with little or no kata type of practice... (one of my pet peeves with the organization) I have more than a few friends that tape every practice and every tournament... It is a TON of footage!!! One friend in particular does two to three practices per week (with different localized groups), taping most of those, and hits almost every tournament within a radius of several states... taping almost all of those... It takes on more of a professional sports "training film" atmosphere... He gets the oppertunity to examine nearly every fight and critique what he was doing right or wrong against each opponent... But it is a TON of footage!! Silvester Burchardt East Kingdom m.k.a. The panyo / handkerchief can be used as a flexible impact tool from medium to close range or as a locking / trapping / grappling tool. Taught as a counter to emptyhand and knife attacks, this clinic will tighten up your emptyhand striking techniques, develop accuracy within the medium to close range with flexible and impact weapons, as well as introducing several locking / trapping / grappling techniques that are unique to the panyo. This clinic will run from 10:00 AM until ~12:30 PM and will cost $25/person. NOTE: There will be a limit of 20 people for this clinic so be sure to pre-pay for this clinic; there will be no at-the-door admission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael A. Scraped a knuckle or a knee? Scratched someone else with their fingernails? No, you should not knowingly take on an HIV-positive student. The risks to others far outweigh the benefits. There are many things that need to be considered with HIV. First of all the only way to transfer the disease is through contact with bodily fluids, mostly blood in this case. The virus itself isn't very hardy, and will die quickly if it isn't passed into a organism's system (even though the sharing of razor blades for shaving has been known to transfer the disease). In other words, blood passing for the host would have to enter directly into another's body, through the mouth, cuts, even the eyes. So stick training, usually will not break the skin, but cause bruising (unless you start sparring with them). Empty hands training, and even knife (aluminum and even wooden) can break the skin. You also have to consider the other students in the class at that time - Spilled blood is considered a bio-hazard now a days, and requires special cleaning procedures. I am not one to discriminate, but you should take into account that most athletes that test HIV+ are not allowed to participate in full contact sports. Boxers are the most visible examples, but don't forget that even basketball players aren't allowed on the court if they test positive. Even thought this may not seem like a contact sport, there is a lot of scratching that happens in basketball, and that is where this danger is. So training and HIV+ individual should be taken with GREAT care, or not all. Hope this will help in your choice, Jason Nardi -----Original Message----- From: rob mulligan [mailto:panguro3@hotmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 10:28 AM To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] HIV positive student I've been asked to teach an HIV positive student and I have no idea about what is ok or not ok. Also in some cases the other people in the class might not like to be videotaped and the instructor has a responsibility to address the concerns of all in the class. But like Ray said, videotaping every class could get to be boxes and boxes of tape or gigabytes of digital. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net FMA ranges? I currently train in Pekiti Tirsia Kali & absolutely love it. I'm only a beginner. It is a close quarters style. I have a friend who also is starting to look at Pekiti but due to his current FMA style, favors a "safer" largo range. My question is (like all of us): with so much time in a day, what range do you or should spend more time on? From what I understand in Pekiti Tirsia, we study the most dangerous range first, then others later. I agree with this rationale. What do you think? As in the old grappling debate, I feel a complete fighter should be skilled at all ranges (stand-up/striking, trapping, & grappling). But with a time restraint put on most of us due to time....????
