Randy I think you are not quite understanding what Crafty is saying here. The fact that the potential student has warned you that he is HIV positive shows that this potential student understands the dangers and doesn't wish to harm anyone else, this shows integrity on his part! You'll have to forgive Crafty his communication skills are not quite as elegant as mine....DOH!! My 2 cents on training someone that has informed you that they are HIV positive is as follows. If you decide to train this person, you must accept that responsibility for yourself only. You have no right to keep it from other student that may interact with this potential student, this could open doors of liability for you. I see Lawyers lick'n their chops already. However if you choose not to teach him, yes those nasty lawyers may still come after you. Of course this sinario can be played out with numerous potentially contagious disease's. But another way of looking at this situation is, how many people have you worked with or trained in the past that were infected that you didn't know about??? And believe me, had one of your students in the past been infected by another, you would still be thrown to the wolves. Welcome to the world of small business. Remember we live in a society ( everyone say thank you to a Lawyer ) in which nobody is responsible for there own actions, its always someone else's fault. I had a lady sue me because she put to much Chlorine in her pool and ruined hair. She came in bought 2 bags of shock and left. Apparently she put the 2 bags in her pool and jumped in. The fact that she owned a pool for 10 years, and obviously did not read the directions on the bag, made no difference to the Lawyer that represented her. Fortunately my Wolf was bigger than hers, but it still cost be time and trouble. I would think that part of your decision making process must depend on the fashion in which you train. Do you play hard make lots of contact, is there a fair amount of blood flow in you class?? I have an acquaintance who for years tried to get me to teach him, I always made some sort of excuse, not to. Finally I just came out and told him. That his life syle made me nervous to make to much contact with him. You see this guy basically sleeps with everything he can. I mean I have seen him with girls that, would make the average guy consider bestiality first. No B.S I would rather cut my happy hose off with a dull rusty hand saw first, than to mess with the alley trash this guy messes with. Its amazing he hasn't taken something home to his wife and kids. Anyways I have to work around this guy from time to time but I damn sure am not going to jeopardize myself or my families welfare to teach him martial arts. Especially since we end up on the ground quite often in our training, we all to often are getting our training partners sweat in our eyes and mouth, bloody noses and what not. Is this a for of discrimination? You're damn straigt it is, to bad so sad. As far as voting Libertarian, please don't fall into the party game, they can be just as wacky as Dem's. Repub. and Indep. Think for yourself, weight the issues, and vote for who you think will do the job you are looking for, if you follow a party just remember. With large scale groups of people come large scale corruption. Remember people interest not party interest!! Sorry Crafty! I found the article Crafty forwarded about self defense very interesting, thanks for forwarding it to the ED. IMHO, I think many a so called professional martial artist teach things that will get them and there student in trouble if ever taken before a court. I find it amazing so many so called experts teach things like locks, control tech. and come alonges to students. What is a lock , do you intend on putting some one in an armbar in a street fight and wait until he says uncle then you let him go!!! Do you really think it will be over just like that!! Let me tell you how it works on the streets of Detroit ( the real world ) you put Joe Dirtbag in an arm bar or some silly control technique your teach taught you. Now you have this dirt bag in a lock and he says he quits. What do you do???? Well if you do anything further to cause damage to him and there are witnesses ....guess what you are now the aggressor, and if he had my attorney, your ass would be paying for him for a long time to come. On the other hand if you let him up you are liable to get nailed with a sucker punch or worse. Just food for thought Fortunately I have never been smart enough or achieved a high enough level of efficiency to lock someone with out doing damage first, then using that pain inflicted upon a specific joint ( from the break that occurs) to control a would be aggressor. Cacoy's Eskrido book isn't out yet. He hopes to complete it once he returns to Cebu this fall. He is here in San Jose, California for the summer. I'm now trying to obtain his seminar schedule so that I can forward it to the group. Do you understand his history as to why we reguard him as such? I assure you if you had you would understand. And as far as inflated ego, not true. I train with Tuhon Gaje, and he has never once shown an inflated ego. But if you feel you must dog him feel free, it is easy to do via the internet. And from reading posts on here "People in glass houses shouldnt throw stones". So go and find Tuhon Gaje and see for yourself and I guarantee you will change your views, if your able.
