Or when he gets up there in years, Rock of Ages, perhaps? Regards, Buz Grover --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Danny Anderson" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 23 May 2003 00:26:32 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Titles Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Boy, some great pros and cons regarding titles. So, here's my two cents worth. Yes, there is a grand proliferation of titles these days. Just in Modern Arnis alone, the number of titles is rather staggering: Datu, Junior Master, Senior Master, Grand Master, Professor, Guro, Punong Guro being the most prevalent. Think of all those with no heirarchy set in place to determine order. "Confusion shall be my epitaph." (bonus points for those of you who can cite that reference.) In the US, a title is both personal and professional. On a personal level, one wishes to be recognized for the amount of blood, sweat and tears accumulated in his/her art as well as understanding adn rank and titles do that very well. Professionally, training under a professor or Grand Master shows you are ebing trained by a senior instructor rather than the school coach. Unfortunately there are many, many people with titles much grander than their achievements. This is America which exemplifies the best and some of the worst traits in mankind. It's the nature of the beast we are dealing with. I am comfortable with a title. I use Professor in my school. It was awarded to me in 1995. I've put in 36+ years in the martial arts and am not just some Joe who earned his belt in the last year or so. In the long run, it's what you can put on the floor and how you can teach which makes the difference, not what you're title is. He has certainly earned that title. Actually for the longest time I thought Rock's last name was "Cumere". If you watch the old video tapes with Prof Presas, Remy is always saying, "Rocky!, come here!". :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 22 May 2003 21:32:41 -0400 From: Musilat@aol.com To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] George Storm Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net George, Now youre getting into the realm of connotation vs. denotation. Another discussion entirely. -Steve Kohn --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
