Came across it reading up on the 9x23 win. on www.burnscustom.com The below is under tools of the trade, pick's for fighting knife's. According to Federal crime and medical statistics, 90% of all handgun shootings live. 50% of all knife victims die on the scene. Of the 50% that do make it to medical care...80% of those die. That's 10% die from gunshots and 10% of those who are cut live to talk about it. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi All Thought you might be interested in this link www.bullshido.com/dl.asp Once the page has loaded click on Fights(6). It is a page of video clips of street fights. Two of these "Highschool Fight" and "Street fu" are of larger males beating the sh?t out of the smaller weaker male. The violence is quite raw and graphic. Being knew to silat and of a very small stature what would be the best otpions to survive such an encounter against a larger/aggresive and more experienced attacker? An overextended leg, a dropped hand anything that might cause their commitment. Against multiple attackers - in sparring - I try to initiate the attack against the side of the group in order to use that person to block the others attempt to strike. Depends what the game is and by that I mean whether you are allowing grappling or simply 'kickboxing'. In real life I try and ascertain who their 'top boy' is. Hes the one that they all look up at. If you cant run then you have to go to the heart of the danger. Seemed to work except when there were a few 'top boys' but by then the opportunity should arise to get away hopefully! ; ) From: jonbroster@another.co.uk Recently I have been doing a lot of empty hand sparring and have found that if both ........ How does anyone else deal with this. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Wolfgang Abbas, ESCRIMADOR" To: Subject: [Eskrima] FW: How to attack Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2003 12:37:15 +0200 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Jon, i would always try to attack first. In Pinoy Boxing you have several strikes (e.g. bolo punch) that are useful for attacking or counterattacking. The footwork of espada y daga is useful, too: slide in with your punch and slide out again with another punch. Mass attacks: We train some Redondo movements bare handed while standing in a circle and everyone is punching the one inside. It works pretty well. The linear attacks (as in Xing Yi or Wing Chun) leave the sites too open. So I would not use them if the other guy is a boxer or fma practitioner. I would use them if the distance is close. Best Regards, Wolfgang http://www.escrimador.com --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Richard KILLICK" To: Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2003 12:25:12 +0100 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Choking with a stick Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Please bare in mind I am not a Doctor. The main danger seems to be the crushing nature of the stick within the choke. The stick seems to put added pressure on the neck and have a crimping effect. As most of us know this feels really bad and you get a real feeling of doom and gloom. I was very lucky that I managed to take a few private lessons and workshops with Marc Crafty Dog Denny during my formative full contact stick fighting years. Not only did I pick up some really great fundamental stick grappling techniques which included chokes and other submissions and more importantly how to flow between stick techniques and empty hand hitting/submissions. I also picked up by association the DB way to play e.g. "Be friends at the end of the day". This has proved to be the most important lesson of all. To me it meant basically during sparring you go as hard as you can but if you sense the person is hurt you do not dial in the final IQ busting shot. This means you get to keep your training partner training and BUILD them up. With regards to chokes its the person who is having the technique applied to them responsibility to call time. If he its not in position to do so the "ringmaster" will step in or more likely the person applying the technique will stop. So if someone has mounted you and they are applying what I call a "Denny decapitator" choke on you, you know when enough in enough and tap out. There seems little point in getting a busted up neck to last 2 seconds longer. Again every time someone has correctly put on a stick choke, I have had that urgent sense that its time to tap out. So to summarise I think its ok to train the stick chokes but you have to treat them like heal hooks in vale tudo. Apply them slowly with both parties being honest with themselves and each other. I also think there is some mileage in not letting it happen often. Being stick choked 24/7 is no fun and if you feel the chokes are a problem don't do them....... The other two instructors who are great at these chokes in real time are Marc MacFan in the US and Krishna Godhania in the UK. Crafty Dog or any of the Dog Brothers will be able to add a lot more depth to the above.
