Wow! That brought back memories. Balisong Inc. president Les De Asis had brought me out to the factory in L.A. in December of 1980 to teach Pekiti-Tirsia to him and his people in exchange for them teaching me how to make balisongs. David Steele was a prolific writer for gun, knife and martial arts mags at the time. He came out to Balisong Inc. and had Dan Fitzgerald (a Balisong Inc employee and photographer) shoot a series of photos in the back parking lot of the factory. (The guy in Steele's article who got knifed in the thigh was also a Balisong Inc. employee and told that story around the shop). For the next two or three years, you saw those photos crop up in a series of articles on Tuhon Gaje and Pekiti-Tirsia knife work (you may notice a skinny kid with a very full head of hair acting as uke in the photos with Leo. Yes, proof I did once have hair!) Dave Steele is an interesting guy. Leo and I were invited to his house where he gave us each a scalpel as a welcome gift. Dave is a small stature guy with a very deep voice who sounds like he is always doing a Richard Nixon impersonation. He was always saying things like "In war, there is no bullet with your name on it. They are all addressed 'To whom it may concern." I remember him showing me a picture of a South Korean soldier on a train. In different articles of his, that one photo was captioned as a North Korean, Chinese or Thai soldier, depending on the subject of the article. Kind of made you wonder about the magazine business at the time, though I'm sure no one does that today (unless you work for the New York Times that is :-) Regards, Tuhon Bill McGrath Email: tuhonbill@pekiti-tirsia.com PTI website: http://www.pekiti-tirsia.com/ --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Blast from the past To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 07:53:15 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > ... you saw those photos crop up in a series of articles on > Tuhon Gaje and Pekiti-Tirsia knife work (you may notice a skinny kid with a > very full head of hair acting as uke in the photos with Leo.
