I first began training with him just over 7 years ago. I've only had the opportunity to work with him 25 or 35 times over that period. He is still amazing and always in such a good upbeat mood. Difficult not to feel so very alive when you're around him... I flipped through the latest issue of "Inside Kung Fu" at the newstand a couple days ago. A blurb in the back glazed over ten fallacies about the martial arts. Three of them caught my attention. Paraphrasing here: 1. "A black belt began as a white belt that turned dark with years of practice." This surprised me, as I liked the image behind this tale, but I guess it may have just been an urban legend. 2. "A big guy of good skill will always beat a small guy of good skill." I don't know that I agree with it. Logically speaking, if all other things are equal, why wouldn't the bigger guy prevail? The last myth "debunked" is the one that troubled me the most and wondered where the magazine got their information. Please let me know what you guys think... 3. "The conquering Spanish never forbad Filipinos from practicing their martial arts." Wow, that's loaded. Maybe I just don't know my Philippines history post-invasion that well, but just how true is this? Comments? Matt --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2003 16:13:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Nat Nickele To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Mistakes? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I am trying to compile a list of common errors and misconceptions students tend to have in the martial arts. I am hoping to use it as a learning tool for my students and myself. (Plus, it would be fun to post statistics to irritate Ray and Co.) Now I know that all of us on the list are perfect weapons, incapable of error and often dabbling in invincibility; but I was wondering if you ever noticed errors "other people" made. If all goes well, I will post my findings back on the digest. Either reply to the digest or email me personally at NatNickele@yahoo.com Thanks all! -Nat __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Give an advantage to one or taother in these areas and the balance is probably tipped. > 3. "The conquering Spanish never forbad Filipinos from practicing their > martial arts." Wow, that's loaded. Larry hosted a seminar with Guro Balicki this past weekend in Austin, TX at Larry's Center of Martial Arts school...and it couldn't have been better. Definitely worth the drive to get there. I'm a complete beginner, and this was my first seminar to attend. Couldn't have asked for a better one. Guro Balicki's skill is amazing...as is Larry's for that matter. And both of them could not have been nicer or more approachable, even for complete novices like myself. I attended with my instructor, and he too said it was among the best blocks of instruction he had ever received. The seminar was jam-packed with nonstop information...not a wasted minute. Guro Balicki and Larry, thanks again...and if any of the readers ever get a chance to attend one of Guro Balicki's seminars, you'll be glad you did.
