Some sort of base is a good idea too. especially if you live in a part of the world where rain is more common than sun (UK in my case), otherwise the ground soon turns into a quagmire (great for environmental training - but the wife does'nt appreciate the mud on the rugs)!! I have always lived by it, being a 5'4" female. You would think that the larger person would win, all things being equal, because of the reach. But there are such things as parries and getting out of the way, as well as strategy. Who would win a chess game, the smaller or bigger person? That is the way I see it. And yes, I have taken out people much bigger than myself, some who have been training for much longer than I. For me, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Some ruling foreign government prohibited inhabitants from practicing martial arts. Many times, the locals disguised their art behind games, the use of farm implements, even plays in which mock combat occurs. Capoeria likes to boast this, doing a dance in front of those who ruled them, while secretly forging their own fighting art. Years ago, I watched "Footloose" on television with my roommate, who studied Arnis. Watching the kids who weren't allowed to dance-but the hero could apply his quick, flexible limbs in an altercation-my roommate quipped, "They hid their dancing behind martial art training." Damn guy made my drink come out of my nose.
