To: Subject: [Eskrima] On statistical averages Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net What you are calculating is the arithmetic "mean" as an average - the most abused computation in statistics. Means are skewed by values in the extreme (as seen in the classic Bell curve). So if there are 9 other people and Bill Gates, then the average (mean) for that would put those 9 other people billionaires as well. What you really want is the "mode" - in this case the salary that occurs the most frequently to accurately reflect the set. For this dataset the mode is $600 per week. Mode tells you "which salary is the most common." The median for this dataset, which reflects the centerpoint of the distribtion, is still $600. Hey if the following were true 9 guys earn $600 per week = $5400 1 guy earns $4,600 per week Total earnt $ 10,000 Divide the total by 10 giving the average earnings to be $1000 per week Well that's  statistics.  Even though this may be a bit extreme it certainly shows that differences in scales of earnings can effect the perceived national average of any country. With 2 fighters of equal skill but different size, one thing is going to decide the winner: whoever makes the first mistake. The little person knows how to best use thier dex and speed to the best of ability and steer the fight to benefit his or her strengths. However, so does the bigger person. Equal skill remember. So, you have a stalemate until one or the other makes a mistake. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Both. I expect my students (excluding newbies) to do proper warm-ups before class. This applies to both "empty hands warm-ups" and "weapons warm-ups." This includes cardio warm-ups, stretching and strength exercises, as well as bag work if they so desire. The reason for this is two-fold. One, we do not waste training time warming up, and two, students develop the discipline of a personal warm-up regimen (including stretching, strengthening, etc.). In addition, before each class segment, I build in relevant warm-up drills to prepare students for the upcoming instruction. For example, before arnis training, we may start with twirling drills with basic footwork. Before the kickboxing segment, we may start with structured shadowboxing, such as a specific hand combination with a specific movement, e.g., left jab/right cross while step dragging to the left (which every student would know). I then segue into the day's lesson. Jay de Leon _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
