Like the old saying goes: *waxes philosophical* 'Lord help me to change the things I can, and accept the things I can't!' (or somthing like that!) Do what you can to even the odds, but certain realities still exist and not agreeing with them won't change them. I'm reluctant to do so, however, as I tried this once on a saltwater fish aquarium forum and the resulting thread became legendary. My reply has to do with the political aspects involved, I get VERY nervous when I hear people flippantly toss around the "ban" word. Being a gun nut, I know what it's like when smokers or, in this case, ceramic knife owners, are attacked by the "antis." Someone posted in the above-mentioned aquarium forum that the sale of the deadly little Blue-Ringed Octopus should be banned in the aquarium industry. Why? Basically because do-gooders with too much time on their hands were whining over the fact that, well, "someone might lose an eye." I say, "Good! Weed the idiots out of the gene pool!" Let those who only buy them just to look cool get killed because they don't respect the animal. Banning them does more to harm conservation efforts than allowing serious aquarists buy them and learn about them and love them for what they are. Sorry for being a little off-topic but the concepts involved (in knee-jerk bans) are the same. Yes, I know this isn't a case of do-gooders saving idiots by restricting the rights of everyone, but it is still yet another example of not using our heads to come up with a solution, rather than just knee-jerk banning stuff. Bram was right, there are detectors that CAN pick them up. He was also right when he referred to misguided (I call them condescendingly-arrogant) people who want to decide for the rest of us how we should live. Pretty soon we'll have politicians who know NOTHING about martial arts (or guns or poisonous animals or motorcycles or religion or...) consulting with their left-leaning so-called martial arts "experts" who advise the politicians what's "best" for the rest of us martial artists/gunowners/motorcyclists/owners of cars with more than 50hp/aquarium owners/etc... A politician who knows nothing of Eskrima can convince themselves that they would be justified in banning some of the tools we use in Eskrima or Dog Brother-type meets simply because they have a mandate from the people! What is that carte-blanche mandate? Why, they were elected! Or rather they were elected by a majority percentage, which could be as little as one-third, but hey, that's all they needed to get elected and therefore they think they now have a "mandate" to do whatever the hell they want. What happens when what they want is for YOU and everybody else to live the way they say you should live? If that means they think martial arts or Eskrima is savage & primitive and, well, "those people should have licenses!" Who decides who gets a license? How much does it cost? Do we need a Department of Martial Arts to check up on you to see if you are meet "their requirements?" What are these requirements and who decides them? Do I have to pay $1000 for the "privelege" of paying for a trip to Podunk, Idaho every year for a week-long class to prove to bureaucrats who know nothing of martial arts that I "rate?!" If I "fail" to whom do I appeal, my Congressman, the one who hates martial arts? Am I now "unqualified" and now in violation of the law if I teach or practice the martial arts? Sorry, I'm on a rant, but I'm also illustrating just ONE aspect of the slippery slope concept. Bob Steele was VERY right, it's a slippery slope when you start banning things. I also just don't like politicians deciding how the rest of us should live. I don't know anything about ceramic knives but it seems you might be able to insert a small piece of steel inside a ceramic knife so that metal detecors would "see" them. However, there are 2-piece plastic combs & hairbrushes out there that are also daggers and knifes. A dagger-stab will kill you sooner than an edged-slash will, (unless you're talking about Samurai swords at full-swing) however the knife edge has a more intimidating look to it than a pointed object, even a dagger, In-My-Not-So-Humble-Opinion. A ballpoint pen could be used as a dagger. I'm only responding off-the-cuff in this discussion, so I'm only scratching the surface & haven't had a chance to cogitate over it for a few days. I wanted to toss my initial reaction into the mix to help us consider as many aspects as possible before we make up our minds. I have an open mind, please enlighten me if you think I'm wrong, we probably won't agree but I still respect other's opinions. Basically, my point is that "bans" create more problems than they solve. -Mahalo & Aloha, Yours in Kajukenbo, --Kurt --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2003 14:21:19 -0700 From: "Deveyra, Tito A." To: Subject: [Eskrima] Greetings from Cebu and San Miguel Eskrima Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I had the fortunate opportunity to recently have been in Cebu for 2 weeks and met with some grandmasters of the San Miguel Eskrima in Cebu - the personal style and expression of the late Filemon "Momoy" Canete as he practiced it within the Doce Pares organization. Thanks to the good graces of Guros Ramon Rubia and his wife Eva Canete-Rubia (granddaughter of Momoy). Ramon and Eva themselves have personally trained with the late grandfather, Grandmaster Momoy, as well as with the San Miguel Council of Gransmasters - the remaining first generation students of Momoy and first tier fighters - Ben Culanag, Banoy Borja, Edring Casio and Momoy's son, Andres "Kano" Canete. Also, thanks to Grandmaster Diony Canete for his gracious hospitality. They all send their regards to all eskrima practitioners. These masters have interesting stories to tell about the times of their fights and matches with no headgear or any type of protection - just their guts and honor. They told stories about having their "backups" waiting with .45s and Thompsons concealed in cars and outrigger boats to keep each group "honest". They would duel on the streets, in basketball courts, in beaches, in fields. They were tough times that I do not want to live in. Their perspective of training is for immediate "killing" of the opponent. Oftentimes, these masters would end up asking you "why do you do that for" or "you will not be able to do that in a real fight." Sometimes, they are so polite that they just say "oh, that's okay" or "oh, that's good too," if they felt what you were showing was so-so. This happens a lot when showing fancy knife techniques - "oh that's okay too but this is what you do if you want to kill him immediately." Cebu is such a beautiful place. The people ar friendly. The mangoes are the best I've tasted. I would be back in a heartbeat. I encourage people to visit. Unfortunately, I had to leave early for this thing called work!!!! I envy Ramon and Eva who will be there for 6 weeks. A truly enlightening and highly humbling trip.
