(as we martial artists would define "great"). A friend suggested I try Bernard Cornwall's "Sharp" series, which takes place in 18th century England. Has anyone read any of his books and would you recommend them?" I am a Sharpe fanatic and recommend the books unreservedly - also the TV series starring Sean Bean if you can get it (I have it on DVD). BTW the stories mainly take place in the 19th century Spain and Portugal where Sharpe battles the Napoleonic armies under the command of Lord Wellington. The first two books, however, deal with the Indian campaign (when Lord Wellington was still plain Arthur Wellesley). Bernard Cornwell is a much under-appreciated writer. His Starbuck series based on the Civil War is also very good. He has a new series out from the 100-year war. If you want to know the details of medieval archery and the blow-by-blow account of the battle of Crecy, he is your man. My wife, reading over my shoulder, says she envies you reading them for the first time. Very easy reading. There are loads of them set between about 1800 and 1820. The first (chronologically) is "Sharpe's Tiger" which is set in India and features some Hindu strongmen who execute people by twisting heads 360 degrees. The fight scenes in the 2 "Tegné" books by Richard La Plante are good. He is a kind of Shaolin monk doing karate. I especially like the (puppet of the) villain in the second book, who is a brain damaged kickboxing champion. The damage comes from a road accident and only extends as far as removing his knowledge of the limitations of the human body, thereby allowing him to be incredibly strong etc And I enjoyed all the silat in the "Netforce" books "by" Tom Clancy. (They are actually written by several people, including a student of Pak Vic). One of the central characters is an expert in Silat Bukti Negara. This is my first mail to the list, so let me start with a thanks for lots of interesting reading. I´m going down to Manilla for a month of training and I am looking for some good shops that sell FMA stuff especially sharp swords, but I´m also looking for books (it would be nice to find a copy of i.e. "Jungle Patrol" or "Swish of the Kris"), training blades, videos, patches ... I am sorry for the grammar. English is not my strongest side I´m afraid :). Yours in Kombatan and Kali Sikaran. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Response to Lisa - Roll over and Die. Lisa, As I am a small person in height, I really have to disagree with your comment(attitude) - What should the smaller person do roll over and die? When I am training with my arnis brothers, our purpose is to try and improve our techniques. Mind you most of my brothers are taller and some bigger than me. The question that you should be asking yourself is what would the smaller person do in an L&D situation. Roll over and die is not an option. You will find that the will to live is very strong in most people. As I cannot alter myself genetically to increase my height therefore I must adopt a different way to using some of the techniques to my body size. Although one very important point is that if you train with taller bigger people when you are in a situation where you need to use the techniques that you have been trained in you have the confidence that they will work on people that have not trained in arnis. Use your size to learn and adapt. Learning to cope with bigger, stronger people is a good way to practice your techniques and find the weakness in the techniques. In my opinion it is good to train with people who are more experienced in arnis, bigger and stronger than myself. I personally learn from the experience. Lisa keep training, keep POSITIVE and do not let anyone PUT YOU DOWN! Your in Arnis. Back in my college days I worked with many of the guys on the Ohio State football team. If you know college football (the proper type of football for you Europeans :) then you know Ohio State usually fields a respectable team. I am 6'1" and 200 lbs. Many of these guys made me feel tiny. Frequently they were 50 to 100 lbs heavier, much faster, quicker and far stronger. Plus they were obviously elite level athletes. Many went on to be stars in the NFL, some were all pro status. This was 30 years ago and my martial arts career was fairly young. But I doubt I could have done anything to these guys, then or now, short of shoot them (using my Sam Colt-do). As we say, sometimes it just isn't your day... As pointed out they do get picked up by some detectors depending on their composition (more on that latter). As most who read my first post understood I was told by the shop keeper that they were a knife designed to beat detection by metal detectors, hence could be taken into football matches etc. Whilst climbing at the weekend, I was talking to someone about the ceramic knifes who is involved in airport security here in the UK and so got the low down on them. Earlier in the week I returned to the local shop and had a chat with the store keeper, who has agreed to sell them as knifes and has removed the words undetectable from their advisement. With regards to safety on planes, someone, I forget who noted that they had never had a problem which is cool for them but I have. I had to talk down one guy from trying to open the door on a flight to Spain (by chance as I was nearest to him) and also had to break up a fight between to lager fuelled football fans who were in our group on another occasion, I must just be an unlucky flyer or maybe its just us brit's. With regard to airport security I can only relate what I have been told by my climbing partner who works in that industry over here in the UK. The UK air industry has a problem with people sneaking weapons airside and on to planes. What implications that will have in the long term I am not sure. I am sure it will not stop digest members flying. With regards to banning weapons I am against that, however I wish some were not made and people put a little thought into how that advertised them. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
