He's half as tall and > twice as tough!" I saw a show on the history channel on civil war era cavalrymen. It said that the _maximum_ weight for a cavalrymen was 150 lbs, because the horse could only carry 200 lbs total, and the kit was 50 lbs. -- ================================================================= Tom Valesky - tvalesky@patriot.net - http://patriot.net/~tvalesky --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Kel620@aol.com Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 10:41:09 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net CC: tenrec@avcorner.com Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Tunnel Rats Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In a message dated 7/16/2003 7:04:59 AM Eastern Daylight Time, eskrima-request@martialartsresource.net writes: > Anyone remember the Tunnel Rats of the VietNam War era? It would be kind of hard for a 6'+ person to easily(and quietly) navigate through tunnels made to fit the average Vietnamese soldier. Read "The Tunnels of Cu Chi". It's a good book about the tunnels & the Tunnel Rats. K. I would second the Battle Circle by Piers Anthony and anything by Lustbader Also one of my all time favorite books is "The Faded Sun Trilogy" by C.J. Cherryh. An entire planet and culture predicated on facility with the swords. The descriptions of the seated circle of many doing group juggling with live blades is awesome. Like a Sufi Ritual of Zikker(sp), but with blades. Also anything in the Dark Elf series by R.A Salvatore are great. As for defending oneself. I have had to defend myself a couple of times, though luckily, only on one occasion was a weapon involved, and there is a lot more to it than just being aware of the law. Each time I've had to deal with a different emotional response from myself, and this should be made known to each and every student of any martial art. The first time I had to defend myself seriously was before I had studied any FMA, but I did have a good karate sensei who taught some practical stuff. I was set upon by two drunk morons and abandoned by my mates, luckily I managed to hurt them enough to get the hell out of there, but when I got back to my mates house I just burst into tears. I couldn't stop myself crying. In other altercations I've felt 'pumped', ecstatically happy and the most worrying of all, normal. All I can add is that remember that the body and the mind react in different ways in each situation. You could be perfectly fine and in control one time you're attacked, the next simply go to pieces.
