Can anyone comment on the status of LAMECO Eskrima? Are there any practitioners of LAMECO on the ED Forum? (currently or previously) You can respond privately if you like. The Art Itself (re: Preserving The Legacy) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Patrick, in response to my post "Preserving The Legacy" you ask 3 questions. I will try to answer them in a satisfactorily manner. I wrote that " One point Master Somera made was that to practice escrima, one has to know every aspect of the art, not just the physical but also the spiritual, mental and cultural aspects." You ask the following questions: Would these be our own personal aspects or those that weighed in the development of the art? Do we become the art or does the art evolve through us? What do you think it means? My answer is that as far as personal aspects are concerned one has to recognize the limits that are adherent to oneself. Because one is limited in doing something does not mean the art is limited or the application of the art is limited. In the study of the non-personal aspects of the art - the spiritual, mental, cultural and even the physical aspects of art, one develops a full understanding of the art, providing there is an adequate teacher or guide. Which helps answer the question of " Do we become the art or does the art evolve through us?" The answer is that we do become the art and it evolves through us. Whether it thrives or fades depends upon far we evolve. Do we concentrate on one aspect or we try to absorb everything. Again, this is also dependent on having an adequate teacher or guide. Regarding Bruce Lee encouraging Guro Inosanto to look at his own culture and Guro finding his wealth there. I could interpret it to mean that Bruce wanted Guro Dan to explore the culture of the Filipino Martial Arts which so conveniently happend to be Guro Dan's native culture. As an example of something similar to this is that if a Russian student was learning a language, let's say Japanese. Do you think the teacher would tell the student to learn all about the Russian culture to learn Japanese? I hope this answers your questions.
