Sure it is nice to have tough shins but you really don't need them. The reasons are 1)when you shield you should have toe up to lock the muscles and take the opponant shin hit on the lead outside muscle in the leg protecting your tibial bone. The proper sheild ends with a flick to throw the opponant leg out of position so you can counterattack with your kick. You can't do that with shin to shinbone contact. These bones are fragile. I was at a shooto comp yesterday and a gentle takedown resulted in a complete tibial fibula fracture...that guy is going to get some plates and screws. 2) when you strike with your shin the targets are usually soft targets like the head or the charly horse zone above and lateral to the knee. If you are getting shin dinks rethink your "form" and practice your shield. While I am a fan of the power delivery of the standard thai kick I still think you should be able to control it up until impact. So if you see a crappy shield coming from your opponant who thinks shin to shin bone is the proper shield you should be able to change your thai kick to something else like changing to attack the support leg. Patrick - You mentioned 'Splitting the nerve' when you rub your shin. I can assure you that splitting any nerves is to be avoided unless you want to be permanently disabilitated. The nerve in question is thankfully deep within the calf muscle mass. The closest it gets to the surface is at the back of the knee (anybody who has been kicked or stuck with a stick here can testify to this!) There is an excellent English homeopathic treatment which i used for my bruises and even when I tore my cartliage it helped with the swelling tremendously. It contained stuff like witchhazel and nettle extract!! it definately worked though, I shall try to find out where it came from and the name. I think for conditioning, treatment should include anti-inflamatory liniment, plenty of rest between sessions and extra calcium and vitamin D and possibly an Amino acid supplement would help. Remember - the body need to repair the last bit of damage before starting on more. Train clever, stay sharp. If you take that approach, I'd recommend less-than-full-force kicking to the lower end of the bag. In Shaolin training we practiced a walking shin-to-shin exercise that I like to call "Clang". That pretty much describes it! Standing face-to-face en guarde, one person steps back to swing their shin into the path of the other's advancing shin swing. The foot doesn't come up from the floor much and it's not a power thing (that's a quick learn because one will not last more than a few steps otherwise). We would do this walking back-and-forth the length of the training space. Follow with heavy pressure liniment rub(s). ... at your own risk ... Alternative ... get a couple of puilis, rattan with radial (?) cuts. Say, 24 inch length, with 18 inch radial cuts. Some Polynesians will consider these "just rattles" but they can be used in stick training, and also to condition the body (through clothing might be best since the things might pinch the H out of ya). You can smack your shins from ankle to knee with straight-on and angling strikes. Canalso get one of those rolling calf massagers and use it on the shin instead of or in addition to the calves. All set? Have at it muchacho, just leave out the gusto and things oughtta progress AOK. Just my humble $0.02 ... uh, but for free. Mitakuye Oyasin.
