Especially their training replicas which have got to be the best practice knives out there. Best of all is the very vicious looking Combat Karambit model. You have to see this knife! I noticed Spyderco also do some cool trainers, including one for the Bram Frank Gunting model. Has anybody experienced the Emerson knife protection system? I just wondered how effective it is. Is it mostly Filipino based? Rich Lund --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Verzejd@aol.com Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2003 21:09:30 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Welcome, Bot! Ever since 1995 or so I started to teach S.W.A.T. teams and sheriff's teams the O.D.F. meaining Offensive Defensive Force. Colorado's Clear Creek Sheriff department, undersheriff Stu Nay is a Full instructor in ODF. I developed the method of ODF sometime back in the late fifties. Soempat comes from my first Silat teacher Pak Tisary Mardjoeki, to him the credit. During the years in Pradjekan, 1948 to 1954 lots of things to learn for a young men. A selamatan was a harvest feast time, you had on the lapangan (big field) the vendors, whip fights (the one with the least whip marks would win a Badju - Sarong or Shirt) also the full contact stick (tongkat) fights with no gear. For years Pak Tisari would win. In 1952 he lost, by a watik shot to the head (same as a redondo) After that he prepared for 1953, he was not to mercifull to the same folks that clocked Pak Tisari the previous year. Around january of 1953 or so I watch him train with his senior students with the curved Stick. He called it Soempat taken from Soempah "Soem"(meaning to swear) and "Pat" from Patenie (meaning to eliminate). If you take two equal fighters with regular sticks, let say the same art or any other art, does not matter, same skill in fighting etc. Now one will have a soempat stick and the other a Straight stick, I will have to give the edge to the one with the curved stick. The curved stick generates lots of torque in when the hit is connected. Trapping in either offensive as well as offensive it is certainly a new toy still to me after these years. I brought Soempat out in 2000 and only taught Guru Chris at the time, now I have more students that are learning the Art from Pak Tisari. The curved Stick for the use for Law Enforcement will help the officer in detaining and bringing the perpetrator to the ground faster and induce compliance. It is paterned after the Soempat Stick. Soon I will have the Police Model that I will give Undersheriff Stu Nay, so he can try it for his force. Ustad Dan Inosanto has started to research the Soempat Stick more so. So will see how stick folks like the Soempat Stick Again credit to Pak Tisari Mardjoeki, Guru Sera and Founder of Silat Soempat. Take care mas Ray and hope this has answered your question more Pak Vic > Pak Vic, > > I understand that you have created a special program of instruction for > law enforcement based on the curved stick of Soempat.
