It is a curved hardwood stick (more of a curve than Pak Vic’s sticks) with a small padded ball on the end. Not very padded I might add. It was straight for the first ½ to ¾ of the stick length and then curved out. It wasn’t a real tight curve like on a cane, but more of a gradual curve. If you held the stick straight up, the end of the stick would be pointing away from you/towards your opponent. It is an excellent tool to use to make sure that you are using proper footwork and body angling. If for example, if your opponent strikes with what’s generally referred to as a standard angle 1 strike, and you just put your stick up to block, with out proper footwork/side stepping and body angling, you will get clocked. The end of that stick will come around your blocking structure. IMHO, many people who don’t do any full contact training (even on an occasional basis) get it the habit of thinking they can just put the stick up there and block an incoming strike. Since they are used to being fed strikes from probably ¼ to ½ power, they can get away with it and not have to incorporate footwork and body angling to get out of the power zone of the strike. This is a good tool to teach them to get out with out going full power. Though I still advocate full contact, even if only on an occasional basis. If you are in a system that doesn’t utilize static blocks, It’s still effective in making sure you are moving properly. For example, it’s a good tool to use in Quatro Cantos drills. Of course, this also got us real good at dealing with curved sticks (Grin). I have read about a couple studies that had people strapping magnets to various bits of their body. It was found that the area near the magnets had increased blood flow. I forget the strength of the magnets used, but I think it wasn't very strong -- about refrigerator magnet strength. Most of what's therapeutic about heating a joint is the increased blood flow, so it doesn't seem completely unreasonable that your friend would see this effect. Or maybe he's just nuts and this is the placebo effect ;-) Joel --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 09:33:31 -0700 From: Gints Klimanis Organization: none To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Body conditioning Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net eskrima-request@martialartsresource.net wrote: > Anyone else with comment about magnetism? Given that Western medicine found that tests with placebos were affected when the doctor knew whether a real drug was used, it's clear that mindset has much to do with treatment. Therefore, probably any exotic treatment will have some effect until it is formally discounted. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Adam J. I see magnet therapy as being a very believable treatment. By pulling on the iron in the blood, it probably makes the veins and capillaries near the magnet more full then they would ordinarily be. I don't think this is all placebo affect, although it undoubtedly figures in. -Andrew Heuett ________________________________________________________________ Get your own evilemail.com address at http://www.evilemail.com --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2003 13:57:28 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Eskrima] Gong info via Google Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > I was looking for more information about the tragedy in San Fransisco. He is the founder of Kapatirang Doble Olisi Eskrima in Davao City. He is very successful in propagating arnis in the Southern Philippines. He integrated different arts he learned from different old old masters of arnis. Now he had just organized school based arnis clubs here in Davao City with practitioners coming from the Ateneo de Davao University, Rizal Memorial College and soon to open in other big universities in Davao city. The first project he will launch is the MIndanao Open Arnis Tournament on Agust 30, 2003. It is his wish to fully re-enter arnis in the educational system including the Physical education courses ( subject) in every school. Many Filipinos this days seldom know what arnis is. A lot of us appreciate foreign martial arts but have not made an appreciation of arnis, our real martial art. Lucky enough, we have Lakan Mario who pushed hard for this. In most schools, he never charge any fee, all are gratis.... for the sake of making art real martial art live again! We wish you all the Best Master Mario! Gil M.
