If there were enough pull to pool blood cells, the magnets wouldn't increase blood flow. Rather, they would pool blood and clump blood cells. For a short period of time, there could be an increased blood flow to an area. For anything longer than a short period of time, if there is any effect at all, circulation would be reduced. Alternating vasodilation and constriction have long been used in therapy by alternating heating and and chilling. The key in those therapies is to thermally induce changes in the diameter of blood vessels. This is a different effect than attracting blood cells with a magent. What hasn't been mentioned yet is the possibility that magnetism has an effect on the diameter of a blood vessel. > Most of what's therapeutic about heating a joint is the increased blood > flow, so it doesn't seem completely unreasonable that your friend would see > this effect. Magnets, if they would have any effect on iron-laden blood cells, would only decrease the blood flow. > Or maybe he's just nuts and this is the placebo effect ;-) There's nothing nuts about a placebo effect. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Todd Ellner To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2003 00:56:35 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: magnets Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > I have read about a couple studies that had people strapping magnets to > various bits of their body. I'd be really interested in these "studies". The ceramic magnets people have been touting wouldn't have the strength to penetrate all the way through skin. And I can't think of any mechanism by which they would increase blood circulation. Maybe it's just a failure of imagination not to see it. As far as that goes, I should have experienced dramatic effects the two years I was a research assistant in an MRI lab. The fields there are many, many orders of magnitude bigger, like 2 Teslas. My blood kept pumping around in the usual fashion. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Todd Ellner To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 07 Aug 2003 01:00:46 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: magnets again Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > I'm probably just speculating on information that everyone else is > already aware of, but anyway... > > I see magnet therapy as being a very believable treatment. At about 10 Teslas you start getting some weird effects because the iron (a conductor) is moving in a magnetic field, so there is a tiny induced electric field; some people start reporting a small tingly feeling. But no, you're not going to pull blood towards the magnet in any measurable way. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Patrick Davies To: "'eskrima@martialartsresource.net'" Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2003 02:55:41 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Golf Statement Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Message: 3 From: "Danny Anderson" EXCELLENT statement about golf.  I have a friend of mine who is an avid golfer (he was the world junior golf champion at age 14) who is perfect for this statement.  It reminds me of what I will say to people when asked what I do, "I hit people for a living." To tell you the truth, ive had to stop saying it. Im afraid people don't get the joke and were actually believing me! Must be the rugged looks! lol I also substitute the sport at any desirable moment to fit the company. Whats the point of kicking a ball to another person when you just kick them? Whats the point of throwing the ball to someone when you could just throw them? Etc @'; ] List might be quiet for a week ray, im off on a training holiday !! There isn't enough iron in the blood to be visibly affected by even fairly strong magnets, so it's unlikely the "fridge magnet" kind is going to do anything. Further, the idea for healing woldn't be to pool the blood in the area anyway - that's a bruise. The idea is to get blood "throughput" in & out, and a magnet that attracts blood in the first place would also impede the outflow of it. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Seraksatu@aol.com Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2003 09:53:07 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Curved Sticks Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Greetings Mr. William Schultz That is really interesting, in all of my years here in the US (Since 1960) I have not come in contact with curved sticks, but I could be wrong of course. In 2000 I did an article for Black Belt magazine giving honor to my teacher founder of Soempat (Forward Curved Sticks). Very interesting folks having the curved sticks now, that is great Footwork is a great Idea and a must, and full contact with one draw back with the Soempat Stick. There is no amount of gear and padding you can use to safe your self if one gets hit with one of these sticks. None. The impact hit is way to crippling. Why?, Because Speed and Impact and small stick point area gives high inpact load per Foot Pound to the end of the Soempat stick. I tried the Doce Pares Helmets and safety Gear, great stuff for straight and lighter sticks, we use it, still not enough for the Soempat Stick Full Contact work. The Soempat Stick, Not a Casual tool to do full contact with. There is a Platform Footwork pattern called "Tiga Lima" that deals with the training footwork. There are six different bent patterns with the Soempat Stick The one depicted in the BB 2000 was with the 30 degree curve for offense. If right handed, the stick with the 30 degree curve and the left with the 90 degree curve. Stripping sticks for training only is really fun, watch our if you have mirrors of people working out next to you, for stick will be flying. In the hands of a seasoned Kali/Escrimadore will make this tool a hard tool to beat. Or any hard core trained stick person. I do believe I&I Sports will be selling these (Soempat) sticks soon Everyone is welcome at the VDT Academy Always train for the sport and friendship Regards, Pak Vic << On the same vein of curved sticks, I picked up a very good training tool from Guro John Daniels of Portland, Oregon. It is a curved hardwood stick (more of a curve than Pak Vic’s sticks) with a small padded ball on the end. Not very padded I might add. It was straight for the first ½ to ¾ of the stick length and then curved out. It wasn’t a real tight curve like on a cane, but more of a gradual curve. If you held the stick straight up, the end of the stick would be pointing away from you/towards your opponent. It is an excellent tool to use to make sure that you are using proper footwork and body angling. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2003 09:39:54 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Eskrima] Happy B-Day Cacoy Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Gm Cacoy Canete turns 84 years young tomorrow/Friday.
