I've been told that this is how the late Edgar Sulite (founder of lameco escrima) died (among others). He did a lot of full contact stick sparring and one day a blood clot came loose and he had a stroke". <<< Actually guys Punong Guro Sulite was diagnosed with an enlarged heart due to many years of stress and high blood pressure. About a year before his death he was having problems sleeping and was experiencing heart palpatations and black-outs with tingling and numbness in the left arm. after being alarmed he went to a Doctor and after doing tests they discovered that the left side of his heart was twice as large as the right side. It had grown to the point that it was starting to crowd the chest cavity complicating its ability to pump blood evenly throughout his body. The doctors told Edgar that he needed to have a surgery but that it was very risky. As they would have to carve out large pieces of his heart and that the risk of damaging arteries and capillaries was too great. Once Punong Guro Sulite became aware of his condition he told a few of us in his inside circle of close students and those of us whom he had informed of his condition started to worry a great deal about his welfare. A lot of us knew of his condition but was hoping for the best and when the news came from the Philippines that he had suffered a stroke and that he was comatose and had developed many aneurysms as a result it was no surprise as we had been made aware of the consequences over the past year but it was the most devastating news to be sure. After choosing not to opt on the surgery Punong Guro Sulite jumped back into meditation and practicing Tai-chi wu style as a harmonious balance to try and control his blood pressure. He was also placed on a very strict diet by his doctors but the damage was already too great to be reversed by a lifestyle change. When he and I flew over and did his last seminar in Germany in Feb. 1997 just one month before his passing in the Philippines we had discussed many things on the flights over and back from Europe. He had so many plans for Lameco and its Standard Bearers and he actually felt that he had made some progress in his battle with death. I was his last private lesson on the day that he left for the Philippines and I hoped that nothing would happen to him with him being so far from his family. I too had hoped that he would be able to extend his time with us and beat his condition through meditation and diet alone. So when he left later that day I was sure that I would see him return in a few weeks and life as I had come to know it would return to normal once again. The day that I got the phone call of what had happened that all changed. Punong Guro Sulite felt that there had to be a balance of soft and hard in training. This is what prompted him to begin training in Hsing-I and Wu style Tai-chi years earlier when he was still living in the Philippines. He felt that it would be damaging to you as a person if you only concentrated on the aggressive physical side of combat neglecting the spiritual side for too long. The last year of his life as well he wanted to grow as a warrior and had started training grappling with Larry Hartsell. I was his grappling partner for these sessions and after giving Larry his Lameco Lessons we would pull out the grappling matts in Larries` back yard and would begin our grappling lesson. At the same time Punong Guro Sulite, Guro Dan Inosanto, and I believe Marc Denny as well had started practicing Yoga together from a noted teacher, Punong Guro Sulite had enjoyed the classes and had hoped that this would counter effect some of the damage done with his condition. Anyway the man was a Legend and has had many profound contributions to the Pilipino Warrior Arts and was far too young to be taken from us. I miss him dearly as a Mentor, Instructor, and friend as do many i`m sure. Be well guys, ciao. I don't have any references for you but the increase in local circulation resulting from magnetic fields is documented. As already mentioned, iron is iron and like I said, physics is physics. The iron in hemoglobin is partially responsible for the increased localization of blood when a magnet is present. The following is anecdotal: In my younger kung fu days :-) I played with small magnets for awhile. I sometimes noticed my hands getting warmer whenever I held the magnets for awhile. However, I couldn't conclude whether this was due to expectation (it was all in my mind), concentration (mental focus on an area can increase local circulation), some kind of magnet/chi phenomenon, or the magnet/hemoglobin thing. Mebbe it was some of all of the above. Mebbe somebody'll do some research on the topic an'figure it out. Re: thought focus and circulation ... this is one reason why therapies for headache instruct warming for the extremities and cooling for the forehead. For some of us, thinking warm vis-a-vis the cranium can increase cranial blood flow and worsen the headache. Hey, this is why caffeine is in some headache remedies ... to shrink arteries in the brain (while at the same time increasing mental efficiency, hmm). So, magnet therapies? I dunno, might be useful for some people for some things sometimes. If there's any validity to manipulation of "subtle energies" of the body, I wouldn't fool around with magnets too much though. Like a lot of things in Oriental Medicine, not to be applied continuously, only as needed to promote balance/normalization. Mitakuye Oyasin. The inguen itself is the tract through which the testes descend. It's often just considered the groin area. Better to consider back pain directly, i.e., from the musculoskeletal and connective tissue perspective. More subtle considerations may miss the point. If there are mechanical/structural problems/injuries, then they need to be dealt with before anything else, e.g., to prevent further injury. Good evaluation starting with the simplest possible answers is the best way to go. You don't want to miss the fact that your symptoms may be due to a tear, etc. I suggest that you follow the advice of someone trained to treat athletic injuries. Primary directive = do not insult an injury. If there's any tearing stretching will make it worse. First and foremost: Get a good, focussed evaluation from some Sports Medicine people. While it is ever changing, what Tail wags for the kind, and apparently interrupted, words. I have been blessed to have stumbled across quite an array of amazing people and methods. That said, I think it would be much more appropriate for Roger Machado to do the Yoga JJ; and not only am I quite unqualified but the gyrotonics requires a rare and specialized piece of equipment, and I have no qualifications in Pilates. As for the Dr. Gyi's Dhanda/Letha material there is rumor of him coming out with something. All that said, at some point there probably will be a release of distinctive DBMA training methods for health and fitness with Real Contact Stickfighting in mind :-) This brings up the matter of the DVD format and piracy. We have not been untouched by people ripping us off by selling copies of our videos. It is quite irritating and frustrating, but at least there is a reduction in quality when one copies a VHS video. However, as I understand it with DVD the copies are just as good which makes me leery about putting out material in the DVD format. OTOH more and more people want DVD. I chase my tail with this and am open to any observations that people might have. BTW, at the moment we are working on a non-instructional DVD for the general public full of fights. With VHS you generally have to use your TV setup. DVDs are nice for a laptops. I can take my laptop anywhere and watch/practice what I am seeing. If you come out with DVDs, I will buy them! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marc Denny" To: Sent: Sunday, August 10, 2003 9:20 AM Subject: [Eskrima] Dog chases tail > Woof All: > > > Crafty says: > > > > > Roger Machado's Yoga Jiu Jitsu (from > > > which Guro I draws heavily for his Silat class warm-up) is outstanding > in > > > this regard (as well as overall) > > > > > I am forever fascinated by some of the DBMA bodywork, to include Yoga JJ, > > Gyrotonics, Pilates, and Dr. Gyi's Danda/Letha material.
