Although I dismissed this particular unit (Samsung SV-5000W/AFR ? for $325, but I'm not sure) because it did not have an s-video input, the unit claimed to play both PAL and NTSC. Also, the review said it's slow-motion and freeze were crystal clear, which implies that the images are stored in a memory buffer rather than continuously read from the tape. There are quite a few combination DVD/VHS units, although I dismissed them, too, because they didn't have high end DVD features. > Although the DVD players can be irritating (the rigmarole one has to go > through before one gets to press the "play" item on the menu or the Try pressing the track advance or menu button after startup. I just bought a Sony DVP-NC665P/B DVD player for $139, ($179 list) It's slow motion reverse/forward, freeze and single frame advance/rewind are great. It's fast forward is much silkier than others. Story: On Saturday night Top Dog and I (and his son Matt) went to pay our respects to Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje who was teaching at the Inosanto Academy. As we sat and marvelled at 66 year old GT's movement, TD whispered in my ear "I want to move like that at that age. That's why I'm going to swing sticks all my life." Even though TD is "retired" now at the ancient age of 45, he is grooming his son Matt. Right now their regime includes running a rather huge jetty while swinging sticks. Ray, , , maybe you're not doing it right :-) yip! Speaking from the vantage point of my looming 51st birthday (in 12 days) I go with GP on this one. I would be utterly fornicated from my merriments but for the array of extraordinary healers who have helped me. Not to say I haven't had to do a tad of work myself along the way, , , , I suppose the unknowable is what would have been the results had I followed a less exuberant path, but my intuitive sense of it is that had I played it safe, I also would have played it lazy and perhaps succumbed to the sundry temptations of this world which entangle so many whose lifes otherwise lack fire. My JVC 7600U looks great, and even plays audio when played fast or slow. The problem is, JVC has seen fit to discontinue the "7000 level" model - 7500u, 7600u (mine), etc. There is no equivalent new under $300 machine. The only new model with this is the 9511, a $500 machine! You might want to look at clearance sources. I quick web search found a 7900U on closeout for $250. Panasonic also has a couple models like this, but I'm unfamiliar with them. I've tried it all. Some of it worked a little, some not at all. Some worked once, but then never again. But it was worth the try. The thing that seems to have worked the best is to remain active, flexible, lean and mean. And sometimes you just have to live with the pain, make it your friend and constant companion. Oh, and then there is psychic surgery, so popular in the RP. It even "helps" some folks... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Danny Anderson" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2003 14:45:25 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: DVD vs. VHS Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Dear Michael, Yes, DVD players are the thing of the future.  Once the formatting becomes standard, VHS will go the way of the vinyl record disc.  Y'all remember those?  One thing i do like about DVDs is the clarity during slow motion.  You'll be able to really break down moves then. What regular practice of arnis, kali, eskrima or whatever FMA can do for you is to improve your pratice of FMA. There's no way you can get around having to do some form of physical conditioning , whether for strength or endurance. That will definitely carry over into your FMA training and will do more to improve your overall fitness. This is regardless of the kind of stick you swing. Even here, you have to be careful - some of my friends have injured themselves swinging too heavy a stick. To illustrate: many years ago, my friends and I entered a local arnis tournament here. Now, our guro wanted us to start running (and sprinting) as well as begin a program of weight lifting. Being younger and full of ourselves, we didn't exactly follow his advice. He let us have our way...and then on the day of the tournament, we all got creamed real good :-), except for one of us, and he had a lot of good genetics going for him :-). Two of us, myself included, had to stop halfway through the second round, because we ran out of gas. What did we learn? Technique alone wouldn't save us - technique plus strength and endurance was what would make the difference for us later on. Even practice of FMA alone wouldn't help us become fitter or stay in shape - we had to supplement our practice with other training.
