I am currently shooting some of the drills as animated GIF and video files for a major webpage update. So stay tuned. From personal experience and research I've found that while I can go rounds with the jump rope, on the mat grappling or kickboxing, high intensity stick fighting (especially staff and double sticks) always wipe me out after a relatively short period of time.  NOTE: On 'Conquest' the other night the host mentioned that when pirates boarded a ship and engaged the crew they had to be ferocious and merciless with no thought for defense.  Not only to overwhelm the crew but to reslove the conflict as quickly as possible before you were too exhausted to continue. My favorite conditioning drills: hitting the heavy bag for rounds (short/long/short/etc...), hitting the tires, hitting a suspended staff (there's a term for this; Suro Mike showed me this brain-damage indcuing drill), high speed/impact sinawalli drills and Kaveman Kali drills. BTW - I hate to do this...but, I'm going to anyway!  I started using kettlebells several months ago, tossing them around a couple times a week, and have had some pretty amazing results.  Overall, I've had a significant increase in full-body strength, grip and forearm strength and endurance. BTW - I've been an avid gym rat for over 20 years and have put guys half my age to shame with my workouts... so these results are in someone who was already in above average shape (for 41 years old that is).  If you are interested in high intensity workouts that will produce results FAST, look into kettlebells... I'm loving them and may never go back into the gym! :P ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael A. Anyways, hope this helps ya out... Waivers offer *no* legal protection. The best you can hope for is that the waiver is proof that they were warned that injury is an unavoidable risk in martial arts training. Yep, another good show on Conquest (the History Channel, cable). They've had a great string of new show topics on thus far this season. > (there's a term for this; Suro Mike showed me this brain-damage indcuing > drill), ... We called it the Dequerdas Stick. A great training device. Copying tapes with a near-DVD quality is no problem nowadays, or even making a pirate DVD or VCD out of an analog tape. Macrovision (which is almost no hindrance at all to copying tapes or DVD) can be used both on tape and DVD. Internationally speaking, a region 0 DVD is for a wider market, as it can be played in any DVD player (or a DVD drive of a computer). NTSC tapes can not be played in all VCRs (although this is not a problem with DB tapes since you also carry PAL). All in all, in my opinion DVD is th epreferred format, not to mention the fact that you can always play DVD in a drive of a laptop, which allows you to take the DVD with you for a training session and allows people to see the drills directly from a DVD. I think the best policy to fight piracy is to make the DVDs so good and so affordable that people simply rather buy the originals than pirate them. This means a price ranging from about $10 to $25 depending on the length and quality of the content. Also, including bonus material besides the actual DVD (like a booklet, T-shirt, etc.) makes people prefer having the original one to having a copy. Sadly, none of this still removes the fact that there will always be someone who settles for a copy. - Marko --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2003 06:48:53 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Eskrima] re: Europe? I started my MA in Hapkido and TKD and Aikido. After 7 years due to physical labor, poor genetics and all the wear on the joints from TKD, I simply had to stop. Took up weightlifting again and mountain biking. Then, started up apprehensively in Arnis a year later. I'm going somewhere with this. I knew my Arnis instructor from early in my TKD days but the timing wasn't right. First night I went to class I thought he was some young kid. He still looked like he was 25 not 45!( and still does). He has a philosophy called Buong Buhay meaning whole life. Arnis is what he does but not what he is. He's around 50 now and just stopped running before class(!!!) last year as the knees protested. He's a vegetarian and still looks like a kid and is actually a carpenter by trade. On fight night, he fights us one after another for 1 1/2 hrs with only very short breaks. Granted his skill has enabled him to fight more effectively with less energy, but we still push him to the edge. He considers it a good night if he comes close to hurling. I can only aspire to be as healthy as he. We consider FMA to be something you can center your health around not the only thing. All my weightlifting, yoga, cardio, diet, is done to enhance my Arnis. If I wasn't doing Arnis, I would have to pick something to center things around. For some people it's aerobics, others spinning. What's important is that it has to be Buong Buhay. You can't just do it part time, one thing. I'm 37 now with 17 serious years of training. If I stop for a week or two, I feel lousy. BUT, I also feel in the best shape of my life despite the early arthritis, ect. If I wasn't training, the physical therapist said I would be a mess due to my genetics. I also feel that FMA more than other arts, has helped me to reach that goal. But also to Ray's point I've had to do a lot of work and research on the healing side to get there as well. The FMA won't do it alone.
