Macrovision (which is almost no hindrance at all > to copying tapes or DVD) can be used both on tape and DVD. Suro Mike Inay had his videotape series Macrovision-ed for copy protection. The sad thing was that it offered no real protection. As a test, I copied the tapes easily and with good quality. I heard of one instructor in Europe that made copies of Suro Inay's tapes to give to his students. NOT an honorable action, but yet more proof that others also had no trouble making good copies. The best you can hope for is that the waiver is proof that they were warned that injury is an unavoidable risk in martial arts training." I'm profoundly sorry to hear that it has come to that in Canada. As for California, the law enforces waivers with regard to "dangerous activities" (hang gliding, car racing, parachuting, martial arts) rather well. The attitude is that "You didn't have to do this activity, you were warned, so shut the fornicate up and go home. Too bad, so sad." For good measure, operating as a corporation (Nolo Press has a wonderful do-it-yourself book for incorporating in California, and may well have editions for other states) is a good idea IMHO-- although if you are judgement proof, this may be unnecessary ;-) Changing subjects, thank you one and all for the responses to my request for comments on DVD-VHS issues. You have helped me understand I need for us to go this way. Marko made an additional practical point: "Also, including bonus material besides the actual DVD (like a booklet, T-shirt, etc.) makes people prefer having the original one to having a copy." Hmm, this could be a very good idea. Thanks Marko. A couple different lawyers told us several years ago that a waiver was almost worthless. Its only value was to make the person signing it believe they had actually waived their rights. ??? Most people that borrow or copy such material aren't customers anyway. I've spent about $2000 on various martial arts tapes, but I've probably viewed $10000 worth of material. A fair amount of the collection I've purchased has to do with my previews. About half of my collection is money wasted on tapes that didn't match my expectations. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
