Assuming an air of indifference, I offered them to him - they really were not worth the hassle and cost about $5 each. This convinced him and he let me on. Maybe the message is to travel with cheap sticks... 2) Recent item on our local radio described how a group of enthusiasts were stopped playing soccer (!) in the park in North Vancouver by the local authority- to avoid damaging the grass! Yet I have practiced in several parks in Vancouver with hardly anyone noticing. All the comments by passers-by were motivated by curiosity, nothing negative. The main problem in parks are dogs. Some expect you to throw the sticks for them... Go figure. Sorry Ray. I don't remember the details of the CA PC. It was over 20 yrs ago. I think it also include yararwa sticks. He also recommended keeping them in the trunk of the car. (t-shirts, etc..., not required.) In my younger years, I carried a hardwood cane (quite legal) and/or a metal ballpoint pen to get around the law. Today (mainly when traveling overseas), I carry a collapsible metal cane. I have a bad back, which forced me from active training and into teaching back in '85, so I can justify having it. I always carry a 2" knife on my keychain. The Way of the Peaceful Warrior is to avoid confrontations at all costs. I am just as proud of how I've learned to avoid situations as I am in the skill I've developed in dealing with them when no other course is available. My nickname (of which I am also very proud), given to me 15 yrs ago by my closest friends, and still used to this day, is "The Wimp". For flying: Just check your weapons with your baggage. (Why go thru the hassle?) For the car: I have a duffel bag with dozens of sticks, knives, swords, etc..., which I keep in my trunk. ("Out of sight, out of mind.") For public transportation: a vinyl pool cue bag will hold 2-3 Serrada sized sticks and a practice knife. (People will think you're just a sleazy pool hustler instead of a dangerous psycho.) Following these methods, I've had no problems transporting my weapons around the world for the past 20+ years. Guro Garry PS: I need some help. I am teaching again, and I need an Escrima related picture for a flyer to advertise my class. Something graphical, not photo-realistic. Something like a black and white silhoitte of two people sparring, or just a simple triangle with a stick and kris crossed in the middle (with or without text). The key word here is simple. The file size has to be very small to email it to me. (50-100k, no more than 500K), or just send a link to a webpage. Thanks! __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Never had a problem with local law enforcement or the transit police. Remember: number one thing to keep in mind is to pass the attitude test. Being a Police Officer I have never had an occasion to transact business due to the carrying of Sticks, or other weaponry related to martial arts by MARTIAL ARTISTS going to practice. I have had times when ive caught nuckleheads with them for no other purpose than to intimidate or cause trouble and thats when an arrest triggers. The comment about passing the attitude test carries heavy truth to it... Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Even if they ban 'em, there are many innovative ways to practice FMA. I practice seguidas, the "San Miguel Form", all the counters and many more mini-forms/sayaws while driving in my car with a comb or pen or my fingers. I also teach classes, spar, do carenza/Karensa(shadow box & imaginary counters w/ a weapon) with a rolled up Chicago Tribune. I also practice my knife seguidas with a screwdriver while fixing a PC when at work. Just about all the motions can be practiced or taught empty hand. Every six count/4-count/8-count/etc...combination can be done with a partner empty hand. Any Serrada counter to all 12 angles can all be simulated empty-hands. Your limbs become the "rattan" stick. Banning the "Rattan Sticks", the "baston", the "olisi", the cane, the Irish Shaleleigh (?spelling), the wooden sword, the Shinai, the dowel rod, the broom, the pipe, the bat, the crowbar or any stick will not deter one from teaching/practicing/promoting FMA. Any hand-held object will suffice. >From personal experience, both local Police and State Police have always been kind to our practice sessions. No hassles whatsoever. Not even with wooden knives and swords. As long as it is in a bag, its all good! In a park while doing counters w/ someone, a Suburban Police went out of his way to inquire because he was interested in learning, did not bother checking our bags. We have had a few Chicago Police members, all confirmed carrying sticks to be legal. Peace, Nate Defensor www.kalieskrima.com www.defensormethod.com > > Are Kali bastons classified as weapons?
