Nightsticks, telescoping batons, and other types of clubs are classified as prohibited weapons in some states, such as California. (No, there is no size limit on sticks one way or the other in California.) Baseball bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, etc., when used for their intended purpose are not prohibited clubs. Why? Because they are being used as athletic equipment, not weapons. If taken into a bar for purposes of breaking heads, any of the above could transform, as if by magic, into an illegal "billy." (This same type of magic transforms everday items such a chains and padlocks into illegal "slungshots" when carried with intent to use a weapon.) If ever asked, I would truthfully describe my escrima stick as a "training stick" used as a safe substitute for swords while practicing traditional Filipino fencing. If I have them in my car, or practice with them in the park am I opening myself up to legal issues? I imagine that this differs from state to state, I am in Oklahoma, but I would like to know what the group's experience has been with this. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sun, 24 Aug 2003 08:33:16 -0700 (PDT) From: garry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: legal question Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Ray, If it's not in the CA PC anymore, does that mean I can now practice with my sticks in the local parks? That would be great! Do we have any California police officers or legal experts on this mailing list that can definitively settle the matter? Sounds like a good subject for a FMA FAQ or webpage: a list of laws in all 50 states concerning our various "toys". (Some of us travel with them.) The americans with disabilities act requires airlinesto allow you to carry it I have carried mine twice to and from thke Philippines, once since 9/11. A good source for hickory and oak combat canes would be Dave McNiell at www.gojushorei.com. I trained with Sensei McNiell and carry a cane whenever I am out and about. For your auto there is nothing better than "The Club", Very deadly when used, the part that locks into the steering wheel protects your hand from being struck. I love the FMA's but in the real world you must learn to adapt. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello everyone, My name is Carson, I am a Correctional officer, and Kali practitioner from Alberta, Canada. I have just returned from an awesome weekend of Espada y Daga, Ilustrisimo style. The seminar was hosted by the Kali Academy of Martial Arts in Red Deer, Alberta. The chief instructor at the academy is Norman Saunico. Norman is one of the very few senior disciples of the late Antonio 'Tatang' Ilustrisimo. Guro Sonny Padilla is the director of the school and hosts the summer camp every 3rd weekend in August, with a different theme each year. All participants at the camp had a great time, and I hope to see them there next year. If anyone out there is looking to learn authentic Kali Ilustrisimo, especially you guy/girls from the U.S. who can take advantage of the exchange rate, I promise you won't be disappointed if you make the trip. It was great weather, good camping, nice scenery, and awesome training. You can check out the Kali academy of Martial Arts at kaliacademy@crosswinds.net or e-mail Sonny at sonnypadilla@hotmail.com.
