Anyone know where you can get canes of "iron wood" (lignum vitae I think)? Also, I once saw an ad in Brigade Quartermasters for a "Blackthorn Gentleman's Walking" made of Blackthorn Root. Anyone know what kind of wood this is or had experience with this? I always carry a 2" knife on my keychain. I usually carry a Spyderco Mini-Dyad, with a tiny blade (prob just 2"), and it passes unnoticed...sometimes I carry a nice kamagong cane from the Philippines. Unfortunately, kamagong has a tendency to eventually crack and or split (with age I understand), which is why I am looking for a more durable cane. >The Way of the Peaceful Warrior is to avoid confrontations at all >costs. Strength has a role in each but I'm sure that endurance is essential. The quote from Tom Clancy goes something like, the deer has no fear of the tiger, if the tiger is wearing cement shoes! Anyone offer input into what type of training they reccomend to achieve this balance. I am seeking greater aerobic capacity without losing strength, as it is an advantage in some instances, however my current tendancy to just run for miles at a fast pace might not be the best plan. How does sprinting work in there? or varied pace run/jog? or 3 minute drills with 30 sec rest periods? Overall fitness is one goal, appropiate endurance for fighting is the other, all by sacrificing as little strength as possible. Difficult objective? There are two reasons I'm asking about practicing in CA parks: #1: I'd like to teach there. #2: I'm thinking about about doing something similar to "A Day of Play & Partnership: A Gathering of Pilipino Martial Arts and Artist", only much more informally. More like a picnic. I've always wanted to get together with other FMA stylists and play, compare notes, exchange info, etc..., but back then, it was almost impossible. When I started studying Serrada back in the 70's, FMA practitioners were few and far between. Now, they're everywhere! So, I started thinking of holding an informal, semi-regular (monthly, quarterly,?) get together at a local park for FMA practitioners, and those that are interested in knowing more about it. I think it'd be fun! (I've already organized a similar event for gypsy jazz guitarists (my other hobby). I live in Palo Alto (halfway between SF and SJ), and I'm planning on having the FMA picnic down the street at Mitchell Park. E-mail both this mailing list and myself (gbowlds@yahoo.com) so we can all get an idea of how many people would be interested in doing this. Furthermore, if any words are exchanged, you are gone. Of course, the judge would probably just sentence you and your partner to anger management classes at about $25 a pop for 10 week, with a misdemeanor on your record. (Not real likely, but things like that do happen.) Of course, if there are several people involved the organizer of the event could be in big trouble for endangerment of individual and the public safety. The media here in Arizona has reported on a few private backyard swimming pool Ultimate Fight type of happenings which had left a bad taste in the publics mouth. Some of it involved Sammy the Bull and the Devil Dogs, not to mention miscellaneous high school kids doing it. AND there is good old Senator John McCain who, as an ex-boxer, says he really knows the fight game and Ultimate Fighting is wrong and should be banned. He had pushed hard to get it banned or tamed down. I think for a while it was not allowed to be aired on cable TV here in Arizona. Of course, McCain has since moved on to other projects, like killing McAble. In a way history may be repeating itself, where people in a repressed society can only practice their martial arts in private or under the cloak of darkness. ----- Original Message ----- From: "rocky pasiwk" To: Sent: Tuesday, August 26, 2003 12:18 PM Subject: [Eskrima] legal stuff and website > Just my 2 cents on the legal stuff, here in Michigan its not always what the > state perceive as legal or not , things here vary from city to city, we almost > got arrested a few years back in a park for having our full contact match's > there.
