In wide open spaces where there is much public foot traffic its okay mostly with sticks and wooden swords, staves and daggers. Real blades we've done in the more secluded areas, still better to do those in a private garage, may not be worth getting them taken away. No hassle in over two decades. I still get extra training Saturdays mornings regularly there with friends. --- garry wrote: > Hello All! > > There are two reasons I'm asking about practicing in > CA parks: > > #1: I'd like to teach there. > > #2: I'm thinking about about doing something similar > to "A Day of Play > & Partnership: A Gathering of Pilipino Martial Arts > and Artist", only > much more informally. Strength has a role in each but I'm sure that endurance is essential. The quote from Tom Clancy goes something like, the deer has no fear of the tiger, if the tiger is wearing cement shoes! "Anyone offer input into what type of training they reccomend to achieve this balance. I am seeking greater aerobic capacity without losing strength, as it is an advantage in some instances, however my current tendancy to just run for miles at a fast pace might not be the best plan. How does sprinting work in there? or varied pace run/jog? or 3 minute drills with 30 sec rest periods? "Overall fitness is one goal, appropiate endurance for fighting is the other, all by sacrificing as little strength as possible. Difficult objective?" END QUOTE I have always found running, stairmaster, bicycle machines, swimming, etc to be tremendously boring. For the longest time BJJ was the bulk of my aerobic work and sundry strength training was done separately. Recently I have been training Vale Tudo at Rico Chiapparelli's RAW Gym and with my body deeply heated from aerobic exhaustion I move over to the weight equipment they have there. The theory I am testing is that with my body so warm I can really get right into it and thus need less sets and time invested in the strength training-- at any rate I certainly don't last as long or do anywhere as many exercises or sets per exercise. I have not been doing this long enough to have any confirmed results-- any one have any info as to whether I'm barking up the right tree or not? Their products and information should turn up via any web search engine. Matt Furey - self-proclaimed expert on catchwrestling. Former national champion in wrestling, former world champion in Shui Jiao, trained for a period with the legendary Karl Gotch. Abhors weight training, and promotes strength and endurance training through various bodyweight exercises (many of them learned from Gotch...who was famous for approaching conditioning from an almost religious standpoint). Has various conditioning programs...Combat Conditioning, Gama Fitness, Combat Abs, etc. Has a reputation for being pricey...the word is that the information is priceless, but the quality of the manuals/tapes is subpar. I would recommend his Combat Conditioning manual as I have actually seen it. Good information, although it looks like he had it done at Kinko's. Scott Sonnon - former national/international champion of Sambo. American representative of the ROSS system of Russian Martial arts. Very intellectual approach to martial arts and conditioning...I have read much of his stuff on various boards in the past. He is definitely one for the thinking fighter who is looking to take it to the next level. Markets various products which addresses calisthenics, breathing, flexibility, and grappling mechanics. I believe he also markets a program using implements similar to Indian clubs (but with a Russian flavor, I'm sure). Haven't seen his products, but have heard nothing but rave reviews by anyone who has ever purchased them. Pavel Tsatsouline - Russian Master of Sport. Supposedly has great information on raising strength, endurance, and flexibility simultaneously. I believe he is the main architect behind the recent interest in kettlebell training. Haven't seen his stuff, but I know and have heard of many who pay attention to what this guy is teaching.
