To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Garry, "Sayonachi" is an old joke among Filipinos, especially those who practice martial arts. It does literally mean "you can have my slippers" as you pick them up and toss them at the other guy (or just leave 'em on the ground) while running..."takbo!" means "Run!!!" :-). It all started back in the 70s (and for all I know even earlier) when the martial arts craze picked up here, especially with all the Bruce Lee, kug-fu and samurai movies. "Sayonachi" is a satire of all those lines in the movies ("What's your style of kung-fu?") as well as a way to steal someone's thunder when that someone starts boasting about his martial arts abilities. Its like all those martial arts jokes in English, about practicing Run Kun Do, or Running-Fu, etc. Regards, Bot --- garry wrote: > Hello, > > I looked up "sayonachi" and found this: > > "n. pinoy martial arts: "sayo na chinelas ko! > takbo!!!!"" > > Can some one translate it? > > Thx. > > Garry > > > __________________________________ > Do you Yahoo!? > Yahoo! I had one that was a gift from PG Mat Marinas that was stolen from my home. Thinking about it still breaks my heart. Type "matulis" into Google pictures and  you can compare notes. As for the makers mark, sorry, I have no idea. Old Filipino comedy movies and comedians like "Dolphy & Panchito" did lots of skits back in the day where they would fight the bad guys in some fighting stance with the pointing and middle fingers pointing upwards, the back of the hand facing the opponent. Then proceed to scoop up their slippers (flip-flops) or "chinelas" and take off the other way. This is known as "SAYONACHI", a slang for the phrase above. sayo na - this is yours or you can have 'em chinelas - the flip flop or sandals or slippers worn in beach or casual wear ko - mine or something in my person takbo! - run, take off, split, run for your life In short, "you can have my slippers". This is a joke where the person doesn't really know squat about any martial art but they sure know how to run and live to fight another day, thus "SAYONACHI!!!".
