How intense and how often do you train? A good method is to do two or three evenly spaced days a week. For example: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; or Tuesday and Thursday/Friday. Now, also, Saturday can be used as a day of training with either of the above two combinations. Another good method is to work on, or concentrate on, different aspects of your physical training on different days. Focus one day on flexibility. Stretching, breathing exercises, tension/relaxation exercises, and stuff like that. Another method is to try not to overtax your muscles during training. Let's look at your warm-ups. How do you do them? Most people do warm-ups which are calisthenics and that does not have to be. Calisthenics and warm-ups are two different things. The purpose of warm-ups is to get your body systems flowing, and yes - warm, to in turn do a regular speed or full speed set of routines, or calisthenics. If your system has forms, then do your forms as part of your warm-ups at a moderate or 3/4 speed. You can do them full speed later if you choose as part of training. Another method is to reduce the overall stress factors in practice, and in everyday life. My final suggestion is to adjust what you eat. Some foods help the body reduce lactic acid and other body waste. Adjust your nutrition to increase fruits, vegetables, and some seafood. There is a new book out called "The Okinawan Program" it is excellent, it may do you good to get it. If you must practice all week (or even with the other two recommeded schedules), it is important to have one day of rest. On this rest day, you can still train believe it or not. This would be the day for spiritual (whatever faith you practice) training, or mental (research your style, read MA literature, nutritional literature, surf the web) training. Many martial artist neglect the spiritual and mental side of the arts and their lives. To give them their due would provide a much need break for your body. These are just some of my ideas which may help. Whether you accept them or not, I hope you become better, and feel better. Sincerely, A. How long per session and how frequently do you just swing a stick in your training? Probably something you'd do during your private workouts. Just swinging, doing power/speed strikes, using heavy sticks (e.g. axe handles, rebar, etc), perhaps beating a tire... A few times a week? Once a week? Never? Just curious. Fung, Hello sir! I agree with your views on training without equipment. I don't train as hard as the Dog Brothers anymore, but I started out with The FAMU Shorin Ryu Club in Tallahassee, Fl. The only protective equipment we used was an athletic supporter, and sometimes a cup and a mouthpiece. Visiting martial artist would bring their equipment, but we preferred not to use it. To this day protective equipment feels foreign to me. I begin my Kali students free-sparring with plastic bats and no protective equipment. They have to begin to rely on the "Amor of the Hands" because I allow contact. I always had a small number of students yet I had fallen on some hard times lately concerning my health and I had to close down. When I re-open shop, I guess I could let them wear goggles or something (but that would be about all). I like this part of your philosophy, be sure to tell me more!
