Yes, there certainly is: get a Mac! All evangelizing aside, I've spent a big chunk of time the past several weeks addressing this problem in a university environment. The simple answer for WinTel boxes is: 1. Install a good antivirus program and update your virus definitions daily. We have servers here that are updating every 3 hours and pushing new definitions, but once a day should be enough. 2. Check the Microsoft site for your computer's operating system for "critical updates" on at least a weekly basis. You can ignore most the other stuff Bill Gates wants to stuff in your PC if you choose, such as the service packs and the latest and greatest bell or whistle, but make sure you run all critical updates. By the time Microsoft releases a critical update the dam has already burst and it's time for you to start filling sandbags. 3. Don't open attachments from folks you don't know and understand that email from folks you ostensibly do know may be spoofing the email address. The simple test for WinTel boxes is to look at the file's extension, that is the dot and 3 letters following the file name (.xyz). If it's some funky extension you've never heard of (.pif) or and executable program (.exe) or something else odd looking, don't double-click. In a network environment there are also firewall options, but they are pretty network, and network administrator, specific. The 3 steps outlined above should take care of the bulk of the problem, though it probably makes sense to touch base with your IT guy for site specific fixes, assuming he isn't gnashing his teeth and giggling insanely in the server closet these days. Good luck! SECOND CHANCE ANNOUNCES FREE UPGRADE OF ULTIMA/ULTIMAX VESTS CENTRAL LAKE, Michigan Second Chance Body Armor, Inc. announced today it will begin an immediate program to upgrade or replace its Zylon-based Ultima and Ultimax protective vests, saying that previously worn Zylon vests wear out faster than expected and that there is a potential officer safety issue. The custom-made vests are worn by thousands of police officers and others who need protection from armed assaults. Under the announced program, officers will be given a choice of a free upgrade to their current vest that will assure its performance throughout the warranty period, or purchase of a new Monarch Summit vest at a significantly discounted cost. The upgrade involves the insertion of additional pads in a current vest and can be accomplished within minutes by individual officers. Either option can be ordered by contacting a toll free Ultima Hotline (1.800.828.VEST) or the companys customer service department (1.888.844.5721). Vest owners are asked to have the serial number of their original vest so that manufacture of the custom-made pads or replacement vest can begin. The voluntary upgrade program was announced following a series of in-service vest tests performed by Second Chance that indicated the Zylon-based vests wear out more rapidly than expected. We want to apologize for any inconvenience incurred by our customers, but we felt this is the right thing to do and we want to carry this program out as quickly as possible, said Paul Banducci, president of Second Chance. We have always stood behind the quality of our products and we will continue to do just that, he added. In the more than 30 years that Second Chance has been manufacturing soft, concealable body armor, no vest has ever failed to stop a round it was designed to stop. Over that same period, the company has documented over 900 officers lives saved, more than any other body armor manufacturer. _______________________________________________ Policedo mailing list Policedo@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/policedo --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 20:42:59 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Eskrima] September 11 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Remember September 11. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
