I agree with your views on training without equipment. I don't train as hard as the Dog Brothers anymore, but I started out with The FAMU Shorin Ryu Club in Tallahassee, Fl. The only protective equipment we used was an athletic supporter, and sometimes a cup and a mouthpiece. Visiting martial artist would bring their equipment, but we preferred not to use it. To this day protective equipment feels foreign to me. I begin my Kali students free-sparring with plastic bats and no protective equipment. They have to begin to rely on the "Amor of the Hands" because I allow contact. I always had a small number of students yet I had fallen on some hard times lately concerning my health and I had to close down. When I re-open shop, I guess I could let them wear goggles or something (but that would be about all). I like this part of your philosophy, be sure to tell me more!"" Qublw, The no gear thing is just a "part" of training not the pinical of the art. I still believe you need the very heavy sparring "with" gear if you need it. Personally, if you don't need gear "sometimes" I don't think you are hitting hard enough. I think you need to be able to take as large a wack as your body can stand up to a point. That point is individual and no instructor can tell you where it is. That point is a "moving target" all during your martial training that will change as you evolve. While there are those who believe you can learn without pain and those who believe you need pain to learn I think the answer lies in the middle. There is really only one way to learn fighting and that is fighting. Since I'm a white collar guy who would like to retain as many brain cells as possible guys like me need to find "training method" to simulate aspects of fighting. Somewhere along the way we hope to be able to put all the pieces of the puzzle together when needed. If you can't then you fall apart and freeze when you need it most. There in lies another aspect of as I understand it of the DBMAI idea "higher conciousness through harder contact." Crafty can expand on this theme it belongs to him. Regards, Carlton H.
